Somalia has a lot of problems at the moment because the government is not very strong, so many people are taking the law into their own hands. Gangs of pirates are setting out from the Somali coast and extorting money from ship owners.

Other countries are trying to support the present government till it becomes strong enough to take back control of the whole country.

What happend in Somalia in 1991?

Well, long story really. Nicknamed, the Battle of Mogadishu(or the Battle of the Black Sea and Black Hawk Down)First, we made a big effort to help the starving in Somalia. BIG MISTAKE. The "civil war" that has been going on over in Somalia was chaotic. The local militants from different tribes or groups would shoot anyone taking the food and they would "steal" the food for themselves. Supposedly there Dictator, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, wanted his people to starve. So, in return, we sent our best Units to get that ONE MAN. Another BIG MISTAKE! We sent the US Army Rangers, US Delta Force, and some squads of the US Navy Seals. We had some intel of where Mohamed Farrah Aidid was but not precise intel. In fact, it was false intel and we captured militants but not Mohamed. During the pursuit to capture him we had 2 Black Hawk Helicopters shot down and we had to send quick reaction teams to help carry out the casualties and wounded. But there progress to get to the Black Hawks would be delayed due to the quick reaction forces and Rangers being pinned down by HEAVY militant small arms fire and RPG(Rocket Propelled Grenade) fire. A "Little Bird" Helicopter carrying two snipers named, Master Sergeant Gary I. Gordan, and Sergeant First Class Randall D. Shughart. These two brave snipers would do the unthinkable and attempt to stall and hold off the militants until the rest of the Rangers and Delta Force could reach them(which would be in 20-30 minutes due to heavy militant small arms and RPG fire) Gordan and Shughart would receive the highest US military award called, the Medal of Honor. Although both of them were killed in a heroic firefight, they will never be forgotten. In conclusion to the fight, SNA Militia claims ranges from 133 to 315 Somalian(Both militant and civilian) casualties. The US sources claim an estimate of 1,000 to 3,000(Both militant and civilian) were killed in the fight. The US forces had 19 killed and 73 wounded out of the total 160 ground forces they had with 19 aircraft and 12 vehicles(9 humvees) and the Militants had 2,000-4,000 fighters. In 2001 the movie, Black Hawk Down, was made to show what happened those 2 long days of fighting. Which was supposed to be an estimated 3 hour rage to capture Mohamed Farrah Aidid but after the Black Hawk's being shot down all hell broke loose. In the end, neither side really "won" the battle, but after the withdrawl, the african militants claimed victory over the mighty US.

Was Somalia part of the british empire?

Schools and the Internet don't even tell people about the actual real history about Somalia when in fact there is more to an Italian colony in Somalia...the north of Somalia was taken over by Britain, the south of Somalia was taken over by Italy.. In all sites it will tell you that the whole of Somalia was took over by Italy and the civil war in Somalia happened in 1991 or 1992. The true fact is that the civil war happened up in the north and around the central of Somalia in 1988. The conflict happened because when all Somalia got their independence they agreed to be one big country so the government and everything was moved to the south of Somalia. Some kind of disagreement occurred in the Somali government and some people just left. This caused the north and the south of Somalia to be rebels and fight with each other. Somalia had this thing about grudging people according to their tribe and because of the problems in Somalia then the southerners had a big grudge against the northerners and the northerner weren't friendly with the southerners. This caused a big upraise between the two tribes. One day unexpectedly the southerners got their whole army and sent airplanes to destroy the central city called Hargeisa which killed more than half the population in the process. Many families were lost and couldn't find each other because they had to flee without even getting the chance to collect any of their valuable items. When the people of Hargeisa fled the soldiers marched right into the city went through people's houses and got anything they wanted., after they were satisfied with their job they marched out of the city again killing people ranged from all ages (even kids who were 2 years old and saying that they will turn their backs on Somalia when they grow up as an excuse). The southerners were happy to hear that they succeeded in their first mission in demolishing people from the northern tribe. Some of the northerners who escaped went down south to live down there for a while and the southerners started saying that a 'a few missiles hit their side of Somalia and they come overfilling our side', this really annoyed the northerners and they said 'your missiles drove us hear watch where ours take you'. This was actually meant to be a threat intentionally meaning that the northerners' tribes would want revenge. This made the government down south frustrated, that very same night the soldiers snuck into the houses that were owned by the northerners tribes and tied them up took them to a place near the sea (they kidnapped 70 men, tortures them interrogated them then killed them all, out of all the 70 people only 1 man escaped). The northerners feared for their live, so most of them went out of the country and the others who could hide hid and stayed in hiding till the civil war was ended in the 1992. But the only information we can get out of the internet and some of the books is the civil war that happened in mugdisho, because they are only aware of that civil war.

This real civil war in Somalia actually lasted for 4 years from 1988-1992. And as you can see it wasn't so long ago.

Why did the us enter Somalia?

The first United Nation Operation on Somalia (UNOSOM I) was carried primarily by United Nation officials in attempt to provide and secure humanitarian relief within Somalia, as a reaction to the eruption and escalation of the civil war. The primary objective was to monitor the first ceasefire of the Somali Civil war. It was established in April 1992 and ran until its responsibility was assumed by the US led Unified Task Force (UNITAF). The operation lasted from December 9, 1992 till May 3, 1993. On May 4, 1993 the United Nations Operation in Somalia II (UNOSOM II), also supported by US troops, assumed official command and responsibility for the operation. UNOSOM II abruptly ended March 3, 1994, following the broadcast of bodies of dead American soldiers being dragged on the streets of Mogadishu.

Prior to the passing of Resolution 794, the United States had offerred its troops to the United Nation. After its adoption President George H. W. Bush initiated the UNTAF in Somalia. While US action did not occur until after the passing of the Resolution, US interest in Somalia was early on in the Somali war. Prior to the collapse of the Somali government in 1991, 4 major oil petroleum giants had agreements with Somalia giving companies the rights to the most promising concessions (Fineman). Companies such as Conoco, Amoco, Chevron and Phillips were hoping that Bush would make the decision to send troops to Somalia, as it will help protect their investments (Chamberlain).

It has been theorized that the former Texan- oil man, President George Bush, had personal reasons for wanting intervention in Somalia. When in the mid-1980s it was disclosed that there was large amount of oil in northern Somalia, Bushed urged American oil companies to exploit those reserve (Chamberlain). After the enactment of Operation Restore Hope, Conoco played an intimate part in U.S government's role in humanitarian efforts (Project Censored). Questions begun to raise on if Bush's effort were to restore hope, or to restore oil.

The Clinton administration used the events of Somalia as a chance to define and test their theories on how foreign policies should work in their view. It is one that should utilize multilateralism, intervention and human rights. The Clinton administration saw these as solution to the current foreign policy problem.

Like the Vietnam War, the Somali crisis was heavily televised. The appearance of Somalia on American television during the summer and fall of 1992 came after the interaction of journalist engaging in routine newsgathering practices while in the efforts of finding more information on US foreign policy agenda (Mermin). However it does not necessarily mean that media was one of the main driving forces behind U.S. intervention. Fact is that "Somalia appeared on American television before the decision for US intervention, because it had sparked interest among figures in Washington who made efforts to draw attention to it (Mermin)".Many of the news coverage during the time of the Somali civil war clashed with the position of the bush administration, and prior the Bush administration had pushed for involvement in Somalia long before action was made (Mermin). It is obvious that the significant amount of coverage on Somalia only occurred after United States interest in the country.

What is the weather like in Somalia?

Hot, dry, dusty days in summer with high night temperatures; normally sandstorms and strong wind at the change of seasons.

The Sahara is a hot desert. Because there is low rainfall and little cloud cover, a lot of heat is lost at night, so there can be a high diurnal range, with very hot days and cool/cold nights. Day temperatures can exceed 55 degrees Celsius; yet can drop below freezing at night. However, night temperatures can be very hot too.

Why is it so hard for Somalia to catch the pirates?

It probably isn't, but they aren't trying.

Somalia has been without a government for years. Different parts of the country are under control of different war-lords and factions.

The official government, supported by the UN, controls little more than part of the capital. They do not have the power to control the pirates.

What african country is in a state of anarchy or lacks a government?

You are likely thinking of SOMALIA, but this is not technically correct since Somalia has always had a government in Mogadishu. The issue has been expanding it to cover the entire country.

First off, Somalia has never been in anarchy. While Somalia comes close to being an anarchy because the national government cannot extend its power to the entire territory. The territory instead has innumerable local warlords who actively contest the authority of the national government. However, the presence of these warlords serves to be a form of recognized government, which is why Somalia is more properly classified as a failed state (a state where the national government cannot compete with local warlords to the extent that the local warlords control more than the national government).

As for why Somalia is a failed state, this was not "introduced" by anyone. This was a direct result of the infighting an disagreements between the various rebel groups that effectively ousted dictator and strongman Siad Barre.
