Why were North Carolina and South Carolina founded?
Eight English Noblemen were assigned rights to the Province of Carolina. These eight Lords Proprietor set about colonizing Carolina and designing laws. The settlers did not like the laws so the Lords made simpler laws.
One of the laws the people liked stated that every one was free to worship God in the way he thought right. This brought people of all religions to the Province of Carolina.
Cultivation of rice became profitable in the southern part of Carolina and African slaves became the major population. The northern part of Carolina was settled by former indentured servants who established small tobacco farms.
Due to dissent over how the province was to be governed, differing geographies, and contrasting courses of the inhabitants, the Province of Carolina was split into two provinces in 1712, the Province of North Carolina and the Province of South Carolina. By 1729, descendants of 7 of the 8 Lords Proprietor sold their shares back to the crown and the two provinces became English Crown Colonies.
By the time of the American Revolution, South Carolina was one of the richest colonies. South Carolina became the eighth state to enter the union when it ratified the United States Constitution on May 23, 1788.
