Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida, the most severe form of which is known as myelomeningocele, is a birth defect in which the backbone and spinal canal do not close before birth. Recent research indicates a connection between Spina Bifida and a deficiency of folic acid in the diet of the mother.

How much folic acid for how long prevents neural tube defects in babies?

There is no guarantee that folic acid supplementation will prevent neural tube defects, though it has been proven to reduce the risk.

In a woman who has no family history of neural tube defects, it is suggested that she take 0.4 mg of folic acid each day, while a woman with a family history is asked to take 4 mg of folic acid each day (10 times the amount).

Ideally the women would begin taking folic acid at least 3 months before conception, and continue it through at least the end of the first trimester.

Can folic acid cause side effects?

Side effects are uncommon. However, large doses may cause nausea , decreased appetite, bloating, gas , decreased ability to concentrate, and insomnia.

What effects does vitamin A have on Spina Bifida?

Vitamin A is not known to affect Spina Bifida. There is a correlation between folic acid deficiency in the mother and Spina Bifida in the baby, though.

What age and gender is usually affected by Spina Bifida?

Is there a link between Meth and Spina Bifida?

No, there is no known link between methamphetamine and Spina Bifida. However, research on the effects of meth on an unborn baby is in its primary stages, and there is certainly some bad effect on an unborn baby whose mother is using meth, but exactly what effect is presently unknown, other than low birth weight and possible failure to thrive.

Are there stages to Spina Bifida and if so what are they?

There are four different types of Spina Bifida, but no stages. It is a birth defect, and the damage to the spine and nerves results in the disability known as Spina Bifida.

Can Spina Bifida Occulta cause weakness and swelling in legs?

Spina Bifida Occulta which means hidden, has long thought to have no symptoms and noneurological problems because the spinal nerves are not involved.

Recent studies may disprove this theory, after some researchers have found people with Spina Bifida Occulta may suffer more pain following a back injury than people with without the defect.

Much research on Spina Bifida is currently focussed on whether surgery done prenatally offers better results than surgery performed shortly after birth, genetics and folic acid. But there are others out there focusing on adults and Occulta

You may want to look into research programs to see if you could be considered for a study in the future. (Link provided.)

How do you explain Spina Bifida to a child?

I was born with Spina Bifida and this comes up all the time. When explaining it to very young children I just say I have a "bo bo" on my back. When explaining it to older children I will use the example of a broken zipper. The spine when forming it is like a closing zipper and when you are born with Spina Bifida it's like a broken zipper that did close all the way and left an open hole. It's pretty accurate and they can understand that.

Are there chat rooms for people with Spina Bifida?

I just did a quick check and found two chat rooms. They seem to start from either a NTD information site or a moms chat that branches off. If you can't find one to meet your needs why not start your own?

Please see the Related links below for some chat rooms for people with Spina Bifida and people who have children with Spina Bifida.
Yes, there are chat rooms for people with Spina Bifida. Please see the related links below. You can also go to any search engine and type in "Spina Bifida chat room" in quotation marks and find one that way.

Is Spina Bifida an autosomal recessive disorder?

It is not exactly known what causes Spina Bifida, but believed that genes and the environment play a role. Women who have given birth to children who have Spina Bifida are at a higher risk for having more children with the disorder. Before and during pregnancy, if one desires to have children, one can take steps to prevent Spina Bifida in one's child. By simply taking in 400 mcg of folic acid a day, or 4,000 mcg in women at a higher risk, not drinking alcohol, and not overheating your body, one can greatly reduce the chances of one's child being born with Spina Bifida. Also, one's doctor should be consulted before one gets pregnant if one takes medication for epilepsy, such as Depakote, or medication for acne, as some medications may cause birth defects.

What causes Spina Bifida?

One of the known causes is a deficiency of folic acid in the diet of the mother during early pregnancy (the first trimester).

During the first month of pregnancy the spine doesn't completely form. In other words, it is an opening of the spine. It happens before a woman even knows she's pregnant.

There are several known factors which can contribute to the possibility of a child being born with Spina Bifida. Not all of the possible causes are well understood. There is known to be a correlation between the diet of the mother, whether or not she is taking a sufficient amount of folic acid both before pregnancy and during the first trimester. There are also possible causes such as the mother using a heating pad on her abdomen or immersing her abdomen in hot water during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. There is a higher risk of having a baby with Spina Bifida if the mother had a baby prior to the present one, who had a neural tube defect of any kind, including Spina Bifida, or if any other family members have been born with any type of neural tube defect.

What will happen to my baby as I'm pregnant with Spina Bifida?

You may have to have a C-section. Spina Bifida is known to have several different causes, including the possibility of being genetic. So there is a slight chance that your child may have Spina Bifida also. But these days there are much better treatments available, such as earlier surgeries and shunting for hydrocephalus. They have a much better chance of walking now because of the earlier surgeries. For a mother with Spina Bifida, there may be some back pain issues and you will certainly have to discuss it with your ob-gyn, they may want you to be in bed for the last few months of your pregnancy.

How does Colodpins affect a person?

There is no such word as "Colodpins." Please check your spelling.

How do you know if someone wears diapers?

There is a bulge in the front and back from wearing diapers even when the diaper is not wet or poopy.

If a person is wearing a diaper and they wet or mess than the bulge grows in the front or in the back. If they mess than you can tell from the scent of the used diaper.

Also it is very common for a person wearing a diaper to walk slightly differently.

Depending on what kind of cloths the person is wearing will dictate how obvious the diaper is.

There is also a tell tale crinkle from the diaper.

The two biggest give away's is the bulge in the front, and the bulge in the back when the person soils themselves.

Having been incontinent all my life as a result of a botched up operation to sort my Spina Bifida out, I can speak from experience since I have to wear them 24/7

Are Spina Bifida and rhesus negative blood connected?

No, they are not connected, although both conditions could occur in the same child. Any two conditions can occur in one child, but that does not necessarily mean the conditions are related. Rhesus negative blood depends on the blood type of the parents. Spina Bifida is a spinal condition, which has nothing to do with blood type.
