There's no way to predict when a dog will have her first heat cycle. It can happen anytime from 6-8 months on average.
The first sign of a female coming "Into Season" is often swelling of the Vulva. This swelling can occur anytime from a week before bleeding, to the day before.
Spaying can be done at any age, but a female dog get some pretty significant health benefits if she's spayed before the onset of her first heat cycle.
A Female, should NEVER be bred on her first heat, (she has immature eggs) and preferably not her second either. The rule of thumb that works best is to breed on the third season, or at 1.5 to 2 years old, and after your veterinarian has given her a clean bill of health, and she is up to date on all her shots.

Why do cats hate springer spaniels?
It may not be the breed but the cat or the particular dog. Cats and dogs almost always take a little while to get used to each other and may hiss/bark and show aggressive behavior against each other. My cat hissed at my dog when we got her, but now my cat happily licks her and they are very friendly. My dog is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which are quite similar to the Springer Spaniels. I would suggest if your cat continues to show aggressive behavoir against your dog, you should try to introduce them in a safe environment, not on the cat's territory (where the cat sleeps and/or eats) and hold both. Speak gently to to the cat and (not forcing it) encourage the cat to go closer to the dog or sniff it. Repeat this until the cat seems a bit more comfortable with your dog. Just give them some time. If your cat tries to 'bat' the dog with his/her paws, see whether she bares her claws, if she doesn't then she feels threatened by the dog, and is trying to scare it off. If she does bare her claws she is annoyed at the dog and believes it is incrouching on her territory.

No not usually unless they get them docked (cut stubby). Although that was banned i think last April so the spaniels tail would usually grow to a normal length unless docked for sporting or medical reasons.
Does the cocker spaniel need a lot of exercise?
The beauty of Cockers is that they can handle a lot of exercise (mine 22 miles over the course of two days and she is 9!!) but can also do with less when the weather is crappy. However, they do need 2 walks a day, as does any dog. Also, bear in mind that they are sporting dogs so they love to exercise including swimming, running, and of course chasing balls.
