Who founded st. Louis?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Auguste Choteau has been called the founder of St. Louis, but it was actually a partnership between the Choteau and Laclede families, headed by the Lacledes. I have been told by a St. Louis historian that, since the Laclede family is no longer prominent in St. Louis, the Choteau family has made a push to have Auguste be the only one remembered as the official "founder of St. Louis," reportedly even going so far as trying to "pay off" the local historical society. If you go to Calvary Cemetery and find Auguste's grave site, you will notice the family has changed his birth date to make him older at the time of St. Louis's founding to make it seem like he had a larger role. However, they overlooked the fact that his family member's birth dates remain unchanged, because his new birthday would put his mother at under 12 when she had him.
