Who were the people involved in building the Statue of Liberty?
The Statue of Liberty was designed and initially sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. It was given to the United States as a honorary gift from France.
Because the sculpture was planned to be of a colossal scale, Bartholdi estimated he would need around 100 tons of copper to construct it. Around 64 tons were donated by French copper industrialist, Eugène Secrétan. With copper supplies secured, Bartholdi eventually began work at the Gaget, Gauthier & Co. workshop.
Bartholdi also interested a former teacher of his, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who helped construct the head and arm. Viollet-le-Duc later fell ill in 1879 and died while construction was still in progress.
The truncated pyramid platform the statue sits on was designed by Richard Morris Hunt in 1881, and former army General Charles Pomeroy Stone oversaw its construction.
Joseph Pulitzer later organized a fundraising drive for $100,000 (approximately USD $2.3 million today) to help fund the statue's enormous construction costs.
The statue was subsequently completed in 1884, and disassembled in January of 1885 for its exportation to the United States.
