How much time do stem cells take to take to make white blood cells?

Not very much time and it is a very complex process. Your body makes white blood cells (WBCs) at such a high rate that it makes more of them everyday than it does red blood cells (RBCs). And consider that RBCs live about 120 days, as opposed to WBCs that only live for a few minutes, hours, or only days. That is even more amazing when you consider that about 45% of your blood is RBCs and less than 1% is WBCs. I don't have the exact time, but I can surely say this, very fast and very profusely.

Why do scientists use mouse and rat models to study stem cells?

It is illegal to use humans. Rats and mice are inexpensive and easy to keep.

Why do adult have stem cells?

How does stem cell therapy work?

Stem cells are general cells that can change into specialized cells. Stem cell therapy involves using these stem cells to repair damaged organs and tissue. Stem cell therapy is still a controversial issue.

What do you think is the reason why some people are against stem cell research?

The primary reason and most important reason is that some people are scientifically illiterate. They don't understand the science behind the research and they do not have even the basic education to begin to understand it. They don't even try to understand it and they let others try to explain it to them but those people often have some sort of agenda.

Science itself is not good or bad, it is what is done with it. If all of society doesn't what to use this knowledge, a least we all have made the decision not just a handful.

There are two methods of stem cell research.

1. Embryonic stem cell and

2. Adult stem cell.

There is not somuch opposition of manipulating the stem cells from adult cells. On the other hand, Embryonic stem cell research involves the value of life. Thus the main issue for embryonic stem cell research is whether potential embryonic life should be treated with honor and human dignity.

Which itself is only a religious viewpoint and not science fact.

What are Mesenchymal stem cells used for?

Mesenchymal stem cells are used for regenerative and tissue engineering. More information on the use of stem cells can found on Wikipedia, Regenexx, Euro Stem Cell and many more.

What type of patients can benefit from stem cell therapy?

Patients who suffer from arthritis, burns, Parkinson's disease, type 1 diabetes and heart disease are amongst those who can benefit from stem cell therapy. However, with all the research that is currently taking place the range of illnesses that can be treated is likely to increase.

How do different groups have different views of the stem cells?

The definition of a stem cell is not in question - it is a living cell taken from a living human that has the potential to become multiple different types of cells.

The controversy is over embryonic stem cells - stem cells extracted from embryos. The removal of these cells causes the embryo to become non-viable and die.

Some individuals feel this is acceptable - the embryos are not going to be implanted into a woman's uterus, so they are going to die anyway when they are discarded as medical waste. Further, the embryos are simply potential human life, but only if they are implanted into a uterus and carried through a nine-month pregnancy. At the time the stem cells are collected, the embryo is a potential human life, but does not have the same moral standing as a human adult. The information and potential treatments that can be derived from these tissues may save millions of lives.

Other individuals feel this is unacceptable - the harvesting of stem cells causes the embryo to die, thus becomes equated with murder. To these individuals, the embryo is morally the same as an adult human, with the attendant right to life and to not be destroyed involuntarily for medical research.

Why do some people argue that scientists should not use embryonic stem cells in medical research?

Basic Answer? Potential.

The most significant argument has been the argument concerning where the ethical line need to be drawn as far as using something that has the potential for life, if it is left untouched. The spearpoint for their ethical battle is centered on the idea of fetal pain; When does a fetus begin to feel pain? There are some pretty gruesome photos of unborn children grimicing in pain. When the nervous system is developed enough to feel pain, it is also believed that the brain is developed enough to generate thoughts, a personality, and thusly, a person. The average time it takes to generate to this point? 20 weeks, Which is why the abortion laws are centered around a twenty week limit.

As far as Medical Research goes, Embryonic Stem Cells are proven to cause Tumors. Leaving only Induced Pluripotent and Adult Stem Cells as viable candidates for medical use.

How many totipotent cells does a 5 week old embryo have?

Embryonic stem cells refer to pluripotent cells that are generally derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts (day 5).

Stem cells have been derived from gonadal ridges and mesenteries (3200 to 4000) extracted from aborted five-to-nine week old human embryos.
