Who is the most intelligent person physically incapable of moving his limbs or speaking without the aid?

Stephen Hawking, a renowned theoretical physicist, was physically incapacitated due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Despite his physical limitations, Hawking made significant contributions to the field of theoretical physics and cosmology. He communicated using a speech-generating device, demonstrating his exceptional intellect and determination.

What is Stephen hawking's illness called?

Stephen Hawking had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This condition gradually leads to the loss of muscle control and paralysis.

What did Stephen Hawking invented?

UK physicist and cosmologist Dr. Stephen Hawking is not known to have invented anything. He is a physicist at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in Cambridge, England. However, he and physicist Roger Penrose provided much of the mathematical support for the existence of black holes, and the means by which they might form and dissipate. The theoretical loss of mass by a black hole is referred to as Hawking radiation.

How does hawking radiation help us today?

Today radium has only limited applications in research laboratories, for example for the preparation of radon standard solutions, in neutron sources of the type Ra-Be, etc.

Possible use in radiotherapy of some cancers.

Radium was used in the past for luminescent painting of watches and other instruments, was used in toothpaste, cosmetics, etc. These applications are not permitted now because radium is strongly radioactive and dangerous.

How does Stephen Hawking communicate?

Stephen Hawking communicates through a computer system that simulates human speech. The computer is mounted on his wheelchair. Hawking interfaces with the computer through a program called EZ Keys, written by Words Plus Inc. Hawking cans the keyboard with a cursor that he manipulates by moving his cheek muscles, one of the few muscles in his body that Hawking still has control over.

What are facts about stephen hawking?

Stephen Hawking is an English theoretical physicist and and cosmologist. He has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ASL, also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease." Stephen Hawking can no longer speak and relies on a voice synthesizer to "talk" for him.

Stephen Hawking is one of the most famous cosmologists and theoretical physicists alive. He is famous, among other things, for the description of radiation that escapes fromthe region near a black hole (Hawking radiation) and the theory for the evaporation of black holes.

Hawkings scientific works (together with others) include providing theorems regarding singularities, the frameworl of general relativity.

Stephen Hawking is also famous because he has accomplished so much despite debilitating muscular atrophy due to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

How did Stephen Hawking lose his voice?

Stephen Hawking has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which causes almost complete paralysis of his muscles, including his larynx. He also had to undergo an emergency tracheotomy due to pneumonia, which damaged his ability to speak even further.

What is a trait describing Stephen Hawking that starts with the letter r?

Resilient. Despite facing physical challenges due to ALS, Stephen Hawking persevered and continued to make significant contributions to the field of theoretical physics.

How much is Stephen Hawking worth?

probably not very much but you might get a few quid selling his wheelchair for scrap.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This, is not true. Stephen Hawking has one of the brightest minds if not the brightest mind on our planet.

Can you think of any other scientist who can actually lead us to a better understanding of the creation of the universe? Of the way the universe works. His worth is priceless. How much he makes, may be up for debate.

What was Stephen Hawking diagnosed with?

Stephen Hawking suffers from a progressive motor neuron disease like ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease), which has progressed over the years and left him almost entirely paralyzed.

What is Jane Hawking's maiden name?

Jane Hawking was born Beryl Jane Wilde, daughter of George and Beryl (Eagleton) Wilde.

What is Stephen Hawking known for?

His email is S.W.Hawking@damtp.cam.ac.UK and his full name is Stephen William Hawking. He was born January 8th 1942. 300 years after Galileo's death. He was born in northern London. He went to collage and received his PH.D and was first a research fellow. Later he became a professional fellow at Gonville and Caius College.

Achievements

Many people would recognise Professor Hawking as the author of 'Brief History of Time'. Despite suffering from the debilitating illness, Motor Neurone Disease, he has appeared on the TV programmes Star Trek and The Simpsons.

In terms of academic life he has contributed to our understanding of the origins of the Universe. His two main theories being that the Universe expanded from the initial 'Big Bang'. He believes that straight after this event the Universe as we know it was the size of a pea for a fraction of time. It then began expanding, and has been doing so ever since. His second, and probably most exciting discovery is that of 'Hawking Radiation'. He proposed that Black Holes existed, and that they actually emit light, before evaporating. It is thought he may win the Nobel prize for this work. Understanding the dynamics of the Universe can help us understand the big questions of the life, the Universe and everything.

When did Stephen Hawking become crippled?

Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with a rare form of motor neuron disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 21 in 1963. Over the years, the disease gradually paralyzed him, ultimately confining him to a wheelchair and later leading to the use of a speech-generating device to communicate.

What was Stephen Hawking's major contribution to science?

well for one thing he constantly raises money and awareness for ALS patients. He also is the reason a lot of places, especially in England, have wheelchair access. before him they didnt and people in wheelchairs couldn't go see operas or even go to university because there was no wheelchair access.

How is Stephen Hawking able to talk using a computer?

Before the operation, my speech had been getting more slurred, so that only a few people who knew me well, could understand me. But at least I could communicate. I wrote scientific papers by dictating to a secretary, and I gave seminars through an interpreter, who repeated my words more clearly. However, the tracheotomy operation removed my ability to speak altogether. For a time, the only way I could communicate was to spell out words letter by letter, by raising my eyebrows when someone pointed to the right letter on a spelling card. It is pretty difficult to carry on a conversation like that, let alone write a scientific paper. However, a computer expert in California, called Walt Woltosz, heard of my plight. He sent me a computer program he had written, called Equalizer. This allowed me to select words from a series of menus on the screen, by pressing a switch in my hand. The program could also be controlled by a switch, operated by head or eye movement. When I have built up what I want to say, I can send it to a speech synthesizer. At first, I just ran the Equalizer program on a desk top computer.
However David Mason, of Cambridge Adaptive Communication, fitted a small portable computer and a speech synthesizer to my wheel chair. This system allowed me to communicate much better than I could before. I can manage up to 15 words a minute. I can either speak what I have written, or save it to disk. I can then print it out, or call it back and speak it sentence by sentence. Using this system, I have written a book, and dozens of scientific papers. I have also given many scientific and popular talks. They have all been well received. I think that is in a large part due to the quality of the speech synthesiser, which is made by Speech Plus. One's voice is very important. If you have a slurred voice, people are likely to treat you as mentally deficient: Does he take sugar? This synthesiser is by far the best I have heard, because it varies the intonation, and doesn't speak like a Dalek. The only trouble is that it gives me an American accent"

Is Stephen Hawking still alive?

Stephen Hawking is alive at time of writing (January 2012)

Hawking has a motor neuron disease (MND) that deteriorates his upper and lower motor neurons. Typical forms of MND include ALS (aka Lou Gherig's disease), progressive lateral sclerosis (PLS), bulbar palsy's (which are diseases that specifically affect the corticobulbar tracts), and progressive muscular atrophy.

It has been speculated that Hawking has ALS, but this would be an extraordinarily rare case of ALS, due to the fact that most people diagnosed with ALS live ~ 14 months from diagnosis to death. Some people live anywhere between 2-5 years with the disease. Hawking has been dealing with his condition for over 40 years, so the pathophysiology involved in his disease is markedly different from typical case presentations, which are very insidious and rapidly progressive. Saying Hawking has a variant of ALS would be more accurate

How does Stephen Hawking speak?

The basic idea is that back in the 80s he had just enough movement ability in his hands due to his disorder called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He would use slight movements of his hands to move cursor on a screen which helps him build sentences. And you know how when you are typing a search into google and it often assumes what you are going to type? Well, his computer does something similar but more advanced in forming sentences so that he did not have to make more slight movements with his hand than he had to. He used to use a machine called the DecTalk DTC01 voice synthesizer.

He has since upgraded to the more advanced NeoSpeech VoiceText speech synthesizer, and also unfortunately has since lost any ability to make slight movements with his hand. So the previous answer is correct in that he is only now able to move his cheek on one side of his face. His new speech synthesizer allows him to select words and form sentences on his computer screen, but he controls this one by moving his cheek and a sensored attached to his glasses detects these movements. It often takes him several minutes to form a short response when speaking to someone.

For those of us who prefer to just watch a video to have something explained to us, rather than reading my paragraph above, I found a site that provides a number of videos that explain Stephen Hawking's computer speech synthesizer, and above each video it tells you exactly where to fast forward to see the part that focuses on his computer. See the related link.
