What is the pH optimum for an enzyme secreted in your stomach?

The stomach is usually a highly acidic environment due to gastric acid production and secretion which produces a luminal pH range usually between 1 and 4 depending on food intake and other factors. Such an environment is able to break down large molecules (such as from food) to smaller ones so that they can eventually be absorbed from the small intestine. The stomach can produce and secrete about 2 to 3 litres of gastric acid per day

Should only one or two alcohol drinks make you sick the next day I had one wine cooler and had a terrible stomach ache the next day. Then another time I had one shot of tequila and got sick then too.?

If you drink a lot, you may have alcoholic gastritis. This is where the lining of the stomach becomes inflammed leading to pain. This is because alcohol is DIRECTLY toxic to the cells that line the stomach. Alcohol=bad for the stomach. Your doctor may prescribe you certain drugs called H2 receptor antagonists such as cimetidine or ranitidine or possibly a PPI such as omeprazole or lanzoprazole. These drugs reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach (think of vinegar on a cut=pain) and allow the stomach to heal, but there is no point doing this unless you are willing to preferably not drink at all during the course of treatment, otherwise you will reverse the effects of the drugs and be back at square 1.
