Sugar and Sweeteners

Sugar is composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It is used as a natural food stuff to sweeten the majority of other food stuffs that we wish to taste sweet. Monosaccharides is the simplest form of sugar. Sugar can be found in the tissues of plants before sugar use, honey was used to add sweetness to our foods. Sweeteners, rather than being a food stuff is a food additive. High intensity sweeteners, are a lot sweeter than sugar that we use everyday that does not contain the same level of food energy. Sweeteners can be natural or synthetic the majority are artificial. Sorbitol is a natural sweetener whereas saccharin, created by accident in 1879 is an artificial sweetener. Sweeteners can take the place of natural sugar, where the consumption of natural sugar may be detrimental to our health, such as diabetes sufferers. Canada banned the use of saccharin in 1977 as tests in relation to bladder cancer from the 1960's showed that their may be a link to bladder cancer of users of high dies of saccharin, also these tests involved the use of animals.

Does ice cream have sugar in it?

Sugar acts as an "antifreeze" in ice cream to suppress the growth of large ice crystals.

Without sugar the texture of ice cream would not be smooth and creamy, instead it would be "gritty" due to the large ice crystals. Ice cream without sugar can also become hard and unscoopable during extended storage in the freezer.

There are sugar free ice cream recipes that substitute other ingredients that have similar "antifreeze" properties to sugar but without the carbohydrates/calories, but these substitutes must be carefully selected to avoid altering the flavor too much.

Potatoes do not contain sugar. They do, however, contain a very large amount of carbohydrate which hits your blood stream quickly and is then converted to sugar. That fact is why potatoes rank very high on the Glycemic Index, a tool used to rank foods for such things as diabetes, weight loss, or optimum health.

For those who are diabetic, you can study that table if you want to find good ways of managing your blood sugar without taking insulin.

For more information about potatoes or the Glycemic Index, see the page links, further down this page, listed under Related Questions and Related Links.

There are conflicting stories about Aspartame and it's effects on the body. Some researchers claim it can cause neurological(brain -central nervous system) problems but there has never been any scientific proof to absolutely support these claims. AS with anything the body takes in,,,,,moderation. It was found when the swordfish - mercury scare started that a person would need to eat several pounds of it for months for any real significant trace would be found. It is always the safest to be careful and that is up to the consumer. I use "Nutra Sweet" all of the time. 4 or 5 packets a day and have for years...I have no problems.

What are side effects of Splenda?

cancer The long term affects of using substitue sugar can cause cancer.Answer Generally, sugar substitutes have been shown to be safe in moderation. Whether they actually promote weight loss is questionable- one study followed subjects who either switched to diet soda or remained drinking the caloric version. After a year, no difference was observed in the subject's weights, despite the fact that the diet soda group would have been consuming fewer calories. The author's suggested that subjects compensated and would choose high fat foods and other high calorie foods to compensate for the lack of calories in the soda. So yes, if you were to replace all sugar with splenda in your diet, eat the same foods and maintain the same level of activity, you would lose calories. But chances are you'd end up eating more elsewhere and not see any change.

Is 18grams of sugar a lot in food?

Carbohydrates, which includes sugar should make up about 45% of your diet. (This would be normal and moderate.) If you eat 2000 calories a day that means 225g of carbohydrates total, if you eat 2500 calories a day that means 281g of total carbohydrates. That is actually I think smaller than the current standard that you see on most food labels which when I calculate it come up with 314g as the recommended total carb. What I gave you before though is a ratio of carb-fat-protein that is moderate and (I think) healthy which would give 45% carb, 30% protein, and 25% fats. So one 2000 cal/day that is 225g carb/150g protein/55g fat on 2500cal/day that is 281g carb/187protein/69g fat. There is no actual recomendation for sugar perse besides minimize. In my opinion however, most is really the larger ratios because all carbohydrates have 4cal/gram, all protein has 4cal/gram and all fats have 9cal/gram.
