Swords

Medieval swords were much longer and used for slashing. The Roman infantry swords were shorter, and although Roman cavalry used a longer sword, they were still shorter than Medieval swords. The Roman sword was intended primarily for stabbing. It may be impossible to say which was better. In Medieval times armies were smaller than in Roman times because no one could afford to maintain the huge standing armies which once made the Roman sword so effective in battle. I think that each was the right sword for its time.

There are 3 types of fencing swords:

Epee

Foil

Sabre

The target area of epee is the whole body. You hit with the tip of the blade.

For foil, only the torso is target area, and you also get a touch with the blade's tip. Sabre is only the upper body. You use the side of the blade, but you can also use the tip.

A sword fight would be the simplest way to call it. Fencing is the verb.

What sword? it could range from 3 lbs to 15 lbs. The common long sword (or war sword if you want to use the right name for it), was about 4 - 5 lbs and perfectly balanced. The greater swords (flamberge and claymore style), are more in the 10 - 15 lbs range, with the weight being in the handle and butt of the sword.

From researching the properties of Bismuth, I saw that it is noted for being a brittle element. Swords are intentionally designed to have at least some flexibility so that the sword can spring back from sudden impacts, which is where a Bismuth sword would catastrophically fail. Additionally, bismuth may not be able to hold a sharp edge for very long either due to how brittle it is.
