it is an event that happened in 1971 between the U.S and China. China invited the U.S table tennis team to play in the Olympics, they sent out an invitation on the 6th of April. the team arrived on the 10th of April. China wanted to strengthen the relations between the U.S and them, they had their teams playing while the two countries discussed serious issues in private. this all happened when presidant Nixon was looking for a trade embargo. Before the ping pong diplomacy, the U.S feared the Chinese because the were afraid they had too much power. i suppose they were happy to get an invitation because the U.S wanted to get on China's good side.
