The earliest known form of the sport, called indoor tennis, was played in the early 1880s by British army officers in India and South Africa, using lids from cigar boxes as paddles and rounded corks from wine bottles as balls, with a row of books set up across the middle of a table to form the net.
Other versions developed in England during the 1890s, known variously as "whiff whaff" and "gossima," and Parker Brothers began manufacturing an indoor tennis kit that included a portable net that could be set up on a table, a small ball covered with netting, and miniature paddles.
James Gibb, an Englishman who visited the United States in 1900, brought some hollow celluloid balls home and began playing indoor tennis with friends, using the new balls. Gibb apparently came up with the name "ping pong," representing the sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and then the table.
However, an English manufacturer of sporting goods, John Jacques, registered "Ping Pong" as a trade name in 1901 and sold American rights to Parker Brothers, who came out with a new kit under that name.
Another Englishman, E. C. Goode, in 1902 covered his wooden ping pong paddle with pebbled rubber, which allowed him to put spin on the ball. it is an event that happened in 1971 between the U.S and China. China invited the U.S table tennis team to play in the Olympics, they sent out an invitation on the 6th of April. the team arrived on the 10th of April. China wanted to strengthen the relations between the U.S and them, they had their teams playing while the two countries discussed serious issues in private. this all happened when presidant Nixon was looking for a trade embargo. Before the ping pong diplomacy, the U.S feared the Chinese because the were afraid they had too much power. i suppose they were happy to get an invitation because the U.S wanted to get on China's good side.

But I am uncertain as to the exact ruling - speed gluing may have been done away with at some venues. Other than that, the only other "recent" rule changes I am aware of have to do with the increase in size of the ball from 38mm to 40mm, the point change from 21 to 11, and the serve change from 5 in a row to 2 in a row. These last few changes took place a number of years ago. There may also have been changes with respect to color of rubber as applied to each side of the paddle. steve
