Confucianism is a system of hierarchies from superior to inferior, each having duties and responsibilities to those above and below them. It clarifies one's position in family, society and government. It defines the social order of a society in a patriarchal format. It's ultimate goal is an ordered society.

Taoism is the recognition of the intrinsic order of things. Taoists believe that one must fit oneself into this complex scheme so that the chi flows freely, the chi being life itself. So long as the Tao (Way) is followed, everything functions as it should.

Buddhism is a system of thought that deals with freeing the mind from it's intrinsic desires. Craving is shown to be the source of all suffering. Because everything is impermanent and transitory there can never be a lasting satisfaction. Only when one can overcome this craving for sensual things can the mind truly find peace.

The common goal of these three systems is, therefore, to find peace and stability within and without oneself.

What was Dao or Tao?

The Chinese character 道 is written in the pinyin rominization system as "dao." This system was adopted by the PRC in 1958 and is becoming increasingly the standard worldwide. An earlier standard was the Wade-Giles system in which the same character was written "tao." However, in this system an initial "t" is pronounced as a "d" unless it is followed by an apostrophe, which would indicates that the sound is aspirated and should be pronounced as a "t". In other words, the "dao" and "tao" are actually pronounced the same way: "dow".

What is the difference between traditional Taoism and popular Taoism?

Traditional Taoism is derived from Taoist writings, such as the Tao Te Ching (Dao De Jing) by Lao Tzu (Laozi), the writings of Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi), and the Tao Tsang (Daozang). It is a religious or philosophical teaching that puts great emphasis on the approach one takes to thinking and acting. It is somewhat ambiguous on most of the things Western thinkers consider the basics of religion or philosophy. Its ideas pertain to "effortless action" and "uncarved wood" (meaning simplicity). The basis of the belief is a balance between Tao (Dao), meaning "the way," and Te (De) meaning "virtue."

The term popular Taoism might refer to two things. These share the grafting of traditional Taoism onto other beliefs.

Chinese folk religion, which is so complicated and inconsistent in its beliefs that it has no name of its own, is often referred to in literature as Taoism (and sometimes as Buddhism or Confucianism). It is a set of ancient religions, ancestor worship, animism, shamanism, and magic, mixed to varying degrees with Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. It accepts many or most of the basic ideas of Taoism, but includes much more. This is practiced in China, and in some Chinese communities outside China.

Taoism has influenced thinking outside China and outside Chinese culture. Many people refer to themselves as Taoist because Taoism has influenced their beliefs profoundly. They many be of many cultures, however, and of many religions. In my experience, these people prefer to take their Taoism from traditional sources, but have other religions, including Christianity, agnosticism, and possibly others.

Were Taoist pacifists?

Speaking philosophically, Taoism is not pacifist per se. Fighting and warfare are recognized as occasional necessities, and one of the most famous texts on warfare - Suntzu's Art of War - was based on Taoist principles. Instead, Taoism argues against unnecessary warfare, and argues strongly against militarism, where a nation or a leader sees military prowess as a matter of honor of glory. The tao te ching suggests (chapter 31) that a one who follows the tao should detest weapons, and if called on to use them should "enter into battle gravely, with sorrow and with great compassion, as though attending a funeral."
