No, tarantulas do not drink milk. They are carnivorous arachnids that primarily consume insects and other small animals. Where does the tarantula have its young and how many?

Not usually. Once the eggs hatch, the spiderlings are completely independent - quickly dispersing in search of their first meal. However - while the eggs are developing, some tarantulas 'stand guard' over the egg-sac to keep it safe from predators.

Do tarantulas bite for real?

Yes. They bite whenever they catch something to eat. They bite if they feel they need to protect themselves. Occasionally a tarantula will make a prey mistake and think that a human pinky is a pinky mouse. Occasionally a tarantula will be startled by an incautious human plunging his/her hand into the tarantula's cage, and the tarantula will give a defensive bite. There are some tarantula species that are quite likely to bite human beings, and there are some tarantula species that are extremely unlikely to bite or even to dust you with their "natural itching powder" that grows as spines on their abdomens.

When the tarantula active?

Spiders are active in the early evening building their webs. The reason is because most of their prey are not active at night. They don't want their webs destroyed while building. The web is strongest when completed. They can also build at any other time of the day, depending on how hungry they are.

Spiders are also active in the early morning to migrate and look for new homes. They do so because they are either not catching anything, or their home has become damage, or they feel a predator is near by.

What habitat does a tarantula require?

My sister had one of those. She kept hers in a fish aquarium. She laid down some type of small pebbles on the bottom that she bought at a pet store, they are designed for trantula's. She also had a water bowl and a sponge with water on it. For best results, ask someone who works in a pet store.

Answer

It depends entirely on the species. Some are more comfortable in a dry, desert-like habitat, and others prefer humid rain forest-like habitats. Aboreal species like to have things to climb on, whereas terrestrial species prefer burrows and other dark, cramped hiding places.

What is the tarantula's defense?

Tarantulas have two main defences. The have a venomous bite with powerful fangs which - although painful, is rarely fatal to humans. They also have irritating hairs on their abdomens - which they can flick towards an attacker. The hairs are extremely fine, and are barbed - making them stick into an attackers skin. They cause irritation and - if aimed at the eyes, can cause temporary (and occasionally permanent) blindness.

How long can a tarantula go without eating?

Mine has lasted two weeks without food.

It is winter now, so I have to be extra vigilant for the bugs I see so I can capture and feed them to my spider whom I named Jeffee.

He seems quite weak, so I must be sure that any longer than this, and he just might die. But to get back on subject, I am guessing two weeks, no more than three.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be special terminology for either tarantula gender (which seems to be the case for all arachnids). I'm partial to the terms 'buck' for male and 'doe' for female, but those are personal preferences. Cheers!

What type of tarantulas are pets?

It depends what you want out of it as a pet?

if you what something you can pick up then get a terrestrial species such as honduran curly hair or a Mexican red knee these are relatively calm species that are know for being docile.

If you want a pet your happy admiring from afar then the aboreal species are very interesting to watch and very colourful however they are very skittish and fast so picking up is normally out of the question also some of the poecilotheria species have been documented to have some very nasty symptoms if you get bitten such as stomach cramps and vomitting and lasting pain.

there are not certainities though some tarantulas with a bad reputation turn out to be sweeties and others that are meant to be calm are psychopaths.

personally i don't handle any of mine even though many species are ok with being picked up no tarantula likes it and would much rather be left alone. if you want something you can fuss get a cat!
