Terracotta Army

Terracotta is an earthenware clay. It contains, in addition to the usual clay minerals of alumnia and silica, a fair amount of iron oxide, which gives it the characteristic red colour.

The terracotta worriors site was miraculous archeological discovery in 1974, peasants digging a well about 1500 meters east of the tomb uncovered an underground vault of earth and timber and subsequent excavation revealed thousands of terracotta figures, life-size warriors and their horses all in battle formation - a whole army which would follow its emperor into immortality!

The emperor who wanted the Terracotta Warriors was Qin Emperor Shi Huangdi.

We are not sure about that but Qin Shi Huang was buried with more than 7500 unique terracotta warriors and clay statues of the warriors were made too. This shows that the emperor was very wealthy. (:

I doubt that the terracotta warriors were modelled on individual living warriors. As models, they would look the same when dug up as when they were originally buried.

The Museum of the Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an is opened to visitors all year around. In busy season (16 March - 14 November), the opening hours are from 8:30 till 17:30. In slack season (15 November - 15 March, next year), the opening hours are from 8:30 till 17:00.

From the dressing style of these statues, the ingredients of the clay that forming them, their making technique, the weapons with them, the bricks of the tomb chambers that hold them, by reference to relating historical records, then determined the approximate date.

For example, there found a halberd engraved with the Chinese characters 寺工 (Si Gong), which is recorded as Qin's national organization of weapon makers. Many small clues like this one have great contribution in the archaeological research.
