What is the time frame after a cut for a tetanus shot to be effective?

Tetanus shots are good for 10 years. You only need another one if it has been longer than 10 years since your last one. However, it is better to be safe than sorry, so getting a booster shot is a good idea. I do not think there is a specified time lapse between getting a wound and a shot. The sooner the better. If the wound is deep and dirty, wash it thoroughly and use copious amounts of disinfectant, such as hydrogen peroxide.

Can horses get tetanus?

Yes, but many horses are vaccinated against it. Horses are actually more prone to tetanus than most other animals! It is caused by a toxin which is released from the bacteria called Clostridium tetani. This bacteria is found in the intestinal tract of horses and therefore is passed through the feces. This means that spores of the bacteria is present in the soil IN ANY AREA WHERE HORSES ARE. Even small cuts on your horse can be easily infected with tetanus and the mortality rate has been reported as high as 50 percent! (I have also seen estimated death rates of 75 to 80 percent!) It is EXTREMELY important to keep your horse(s) vaccinated against tetanus. Since it is a very quick shot and extremely inexpensive, (normally around $15 dollars) it is well worth every penny. A lot of vets will let you buy the vaccine and give the shot yourself, (if you are comfortable with giving injections), which will save you even more money on the vet making a house call. **ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: If your unvaccinated horse gets a cut that heals up and shows no signs of tetanus, don't be fooled. Tetanus can lie dormant in a horse's system for as long as six months before they show any signs of having contracted the disease. Because of this, the only way to ensure your horse doesn't get tetanus is to stop it from happening in the first place. Waiting until they get a wound may be too late. Please protect your horses and keep them on a schedule of REGULAR tetanus vaccinations! === === Tetanus does not come from rusty nails, staples, or metal items. As the above author states, it runs in the GI tract and is thus apparent in feces. The "nail" simply cuts the foot and allows entrance to the bacteria.

When do I need a tetanus shot?

As I understand, there is no last required tetanus shot. The vaccinations for tetanus are administered every ten years after the age of 6 years old. Before the age of six years old, a tetanus and diptheria vaccination is given when one is an infant, I believe. Exception is when one experiences in particular a deep would. If this occurs, a tetanus vaccination is given as what is called post-exposure prophylaxis. What that means is that the vaccination for tetanus is given due to the possibility that, due to the wound, one may have been exposed to the bacteria that causes the disease of tetanus. After the tetanus vaccination is given, it may take up to two weeks for the formulation of antibodies to prevent acquiring the disease of tetanus.

What is the link between Tetanus and horses?

Horses are one of the most susceptible creatures to tetanus. They also shed the bacteria that causes tetanus in their feces so they live in constantly contaminated surroundings. Horses are also very prone to injuries on the lower legs and hooves and these wounds are at high risk of contamination with the bacteria through exposure to soil.

No, tetanus is not a genetic disease. It's a bacterial disease. You usually get tetanus from cutting yourself on rusty metal, as it is a prime home for the Clostridium tetani bacteria.

one must get anti tetanus serum(a.t.s) after an injury specially in the case of cuts because the cut portion is now exposed to atmoshphere and it is prone to infection caused by bctetria, fungus etc since the atmoshphere carries a lots of microbes in it .the anti tetanus serum intiates the w.b.c to fight against any foreign invation or entry of foreign microbes.some pathogenic microbes live in our body also .which causes disease.this tetanus vaccine saves us from infections

What are the indications for anti tetanus vaccine?

The CDC has issued standard recommendations for the anti tetanus vaccine. keep in mind there is a difference between the vaccine (TD) and the immunoglobulin (TIG). If the individual has had 3 or more vaccinations in the past, then you would give the vaccination only if they had not received their last vaccination within the past 10 years (for non tetanus prone wounds) or 5 years (for tetanus prone wounds. he immunoglobulin (TIG) is given only to individuals with tetanus prone wounds who have had less than 3 previous vaccinations (or unknown status). Hope this helps.
