The origin of the Texas Rangers?
The Texas Rangers were originally The Washington Senators. However, they were not the original Washington Senators; the original Washington Senators became the Minnesota Twins. Now if you are talking about the law enforcement Rangers. They were organized as police force in Texas. The first members were "minutemen" hired by U.S. settlers as protection against Indian attacks in the 1835. They did not wear uniforms or salute their officers but were highly disciplined and known for their marksmanship. At their peak in the 1870s, the Rangers brought law and order to hundreds of miles of Texas frontier. In 1935 they were merged with the state highway patrol. They handle investigations in the state much like the FBI does in the country.
Who is the best Texas ranger baseball player?
The answer to that is fairly subjective, unless you go by statistics alone which is not a true indication of "best" because of all the intangibles that intrinsically come with humanity. Based on personal preference, the top five Texas Rangers of all time, IMO, would be:
5. Gaylord Perry
4. Rafael Palmero
3. Rune Sandberg
2. Ivan Rodriguez
1. Nolan Ryan
But again, subjectivity, bias, and polling would need to be accounted for to make this a comprehensive list.

What does it mean when the Texas rangers interlock their fingers?
So in 2011 the Texas Rangers have apparently come up with a new hand gesture (shown above). I've been scouring the interwebs to figure out what it may be called or mean; however, I'm not having much luck. I've heard rumors that Ranger players are not yet ready to unveil it's name; however, you can't believe everything you read on the web. Perhaps it is something dreamed up by the Rangers marketing team to start selling more merchandise seeing how wildly popular the "claw" and "antlers" have become?
I have seen several posts calling this "the cobra"; however, I have also seen posts refuting this claim stating that Michael Young actually spoke out and denied that it is the "cobra".
***UPDATE*** So, according to an article in the Dallas Morning News, the sign is indeed called the "Sitting Duck". Apparently it was a bit of an inside joke that started in the clubhouse and involved ex-Rangers infielder Hank Blalock. For some reason, Rangers players still won't explain exactly what it means, yet fans are still embracing it.
MLB.com is now selling a shirt entitled "Ducks on the Pond" with the hand gesture; however, it doesn't make sense to me that the hand sign simply means bases loaded considering the Rangers do it every time they get a hit....
In addition, the Rangers couple the sitting duck with a second gesture where they essentially interlock their fingers...no idea what is going on there.

Was there a Texas Ranger named Ed Hiler?
In late 1963 or early 1964, I met an elderly man who was touring the country as retired Texas Ranger, Ed Hiler. I was about 14 years old, and this man was brought to the Wade Hampton Mall in Greenville, South Carolina as a promotional attraction. He wore western clothes and two Colt .45 pistols, which he said were commemorative Centennial pistols given to him by the Colt company. They were either silver or nickel plated, and very beautiful. He said that he rode with a group that was chasing Pancho Villa, and that one of Villa's men attacked him with a knife, trying to slit his throat. He showed me the edge of his hand with a deep scar, which he said he received while blocking the attack.
He said that he had know Wyatt Earp, and that when Earp on on his death bed in Los Angeles, Earp gave him his Derringer pistol.
I don't remember much else, but I still have a card (post card size) with Ed Hiler's picture on it.
It would be very interesting to be able to verify the truth of this man's claims, but there must be something to it, as he was there all day at the mall and was being billed as an attraction to come see.
