"COLOUR! CAN'T YOU GET IT RIGHT?"

If you watch the beginning of the movie it shows the year 1909 when celie was about 13. There is a mistake dealing with the year. Because when they show her having the baby it states winter of the year but when they show spring it shows the year before. So it's about 40 years from when she has her secon child. Now the book I'm now sure but usually when they do a movie based on a book they cover the same time period.

When was the book the color purple written?

Alice Walker used African American Vernacular English (AAVE) to create Celie's voice in the novel.

AAVE contains features such as

1) Use of the object pronoun 'us' instead of the subject pronoun 'we'.

"where us going"

2) Double Negative - "Us don't say nothing to each other"

3) Lexis associated with the Southern States of America - "Aint","Hot diggidy dog"

4) Verb uninflected for tens - used for those irregular verbs that remain in present tense. - "he say"

5) Present tense verbs uninflected for person or number. "shug write...', 'Harpo want to know"

6) Altered syntax in question. "how old she is?", "How her hair is".

7)Phonetic Spelling. "Two berkulosis", "pu that town", "ast", "ole"

8) Past tense inflection omitted - this phrase should be used when the past tense affix - 'ed' is missing. "he pick up a rock and laid my head open"

9) The unmarked possessive. - "Harpo girl daddy"

10) The ommission of the verb 'to be'. "who this?", "what you doing here"

11) Use of the infinitive form of the verb 'to be'. "He be looking at Nettie"

12) Ommission of the copula verb - a copula verb is a verb that links the subject to a complement.

Example: It feels cold

It = subject

feels = copula verb

cold = complement (A complement is a description of the subject)

Generally in AAVE, when the copula verb is omitted, the copula verb is 'to be':

"Shug Avery sick"

"he weak"

Why was the book The Color Purple by Alice Walker banned in the US?

People tried to ban it, but it wasn't banned in the US. People who wanted to stop the making of the movie, because they said it portrayed Black men in a bad way. There are sleazy and unkind people of all kinds just as there are good and kind people of all kinds. The First amendment allows authors and filmmakers the freedom to print or promote whatever is their viewpoint.
My personal opinion: I have a problem with teachers assigning students to read this book. The movie was rated 'R' or restricted, for a reason. By US standards, 'R' means it's not intended for viewers under 17.
Parents, don't try to ban things, just don't watch it, and keep your kids away from it.
But, we should raise our own children, not the schools.
If persons (hate groups, books, movies, websites, etc) want to promote hatred, terrorism, sexual abuse or murder, they should be punished
.
Learn what your kids do in their spare time. If you don't teach them, "the streets" will!
I didn't read the book or see the movie, but I have read about it.
