You need to take random jobs from Vex or Devlin, and do five jobs each for Whiterun, Solitude, Windhelm and Markarth. When you've done five for one of them, Devlin will offer a special job for that city, to establish the thieves guild's influence there. Each special job completed will bring a merchant to come work in the thieves guild, and increase the amount of gold Tonilia has for trade. When you've done all four, you'll get the achievement for restoring the guild's former glory, and formally become the guildmaster.

Certain NPC's are flagged as essential until a certain stage of the game where they can be killed. Most (if not all) Jarls are flagged as essential and the Jarl of Whiterun is critical for the game's main questline progression. So attempting to kill an essential character will only make them unconscious for a while.

Now, the morality issue of attempted murder of a Jarl is considered regicide and therefore the highest crime to king and country. If there is a Jarl that can be killed and you have been seen doing so will increase your crime in that region greatly and the news will spread all over Skyrim. installing "skyrim" from the disc is just supposed to make the game run smoother/ faster. personally I don't notice much difference in performance but if you have a lot of free space it could be worth a try.

If looking for a warrior your best bet is either to get lydia the housecarl whom will do just about anything or rank up in the companions and take any of them... A mage companion would be best obtained from the college of winterhold but if they die you lose access to the college!
