What does the fight between Achilles and hector reveal about the characters of the two heroes and who has the most advantage and why?

An example of Homer contrasting Achilles' selfishness and Hector's nobility is when they have their discussion about their reasons for fighting in the war. Hector reveals his reasoning for fighting when he talks with his wife Andromache and states, "Wife, I too have thought upon all this, but with what face should I look upon the Trojans, men or women, if I shirked battle like a coward? I cannot do so: I know nothing save to fight bravely in the forefront of the Trojan host and win renown alike for my father and myself." This quote shows that Hector is fighting for respect for his family name, his city, and to protect his family from harm. This contrasts with Achilles who fights for fame and abundant wealth. He states to Agamemnon "Order other people about, not me, for I shall obey no longer. Furthermore I say- and lay my saying to your heart- I shall fight neither you nor any man about this girl, for those that take were those also that gave. But of all else that is at my ship you shall carry away nothing by force. Try, that others may see; if you do, my spear shall be reddened with your blood." Achilles and Hector through Homer's use of foils to each other prove that each have a different reason to fight. Achilles fights only for himself where as Hector shows his humility by fighting for his family's protection and for the love of his country.

Homer tells us this story repeatedly throughout the whole story as a contrast to Odysseus' relationship with Penelope. Not only in the first four books, but also when Odysseus visits the land of the dead and other places the story is mentioned we get a good look at exactly what could have happened if Penelope weren't as faithful.

How long is The Iliad?

a lot

My copy of the Iliad has 297 pages. I came across the question on my quest to find out if it was abridged. I don't think it's abridged but it's the W.H.D. Rouse "plain English" translation. It's the same story with many of the same words (translated) but it doesn't have all the stylistic words that Homer original used. So I think the original "epic poem" was a lot longer. Wikepedia claims that it is aprox.15,700 lines. My copy is the seventh printing, 1956. It's published as a MENTOR BOOK by the New American Library.

Oh, and it's very small.

Okay so there's a bigger more recently published version (http://www.amazon.com/Iliad-Penguin-Classics-Deluxe/dp/0140275363) that is 704 pages and it's dimensions: 8.3 x 5.5 x 1.9 inches.

How does Odysseus react when he awakens on land?

This depends on which instance you are speaking of. Odysseus wakes up on several islands, including Scheria, land of the Phaecians; Ogygia, Calypso's island; and Ithaca, his home island.

On Scheria, and Ogygia he is glad to be alive and curious about his surroundings.

On Ithaca, he is curious about his surroundings, and mildly doubtful that he is in Ithaca. He feels betrayed by the Scherians who promised to take him home, since he does not recognize Ithaca after twenty years.

Certainly not. The Iliad dates from 8th century B.C. , or perhaps a little earlier, and was not written down much before the 5th, while the Epic of Gilgamesh is at least a thousand years older, from around 2,000 B.C. Exact dates for the Mahabharata are problematical, but the oldest parts are ancient indeed, and easily as old as the Iliad

Why read The Iliad and The Odyssey?

Greek mythology!! The Iliad is an epic poem about the Trojan war. This war obviously never happened. It was passed down from generation to generation as an oral poem. It wasn't written until the fifth century BC. It is not known who wrote the poem but it is attributed to Homer. The Odyssey is another epic also attributed to Homer. It follows the Trojan war and the fall of Troy. They are both major Greek epics and were studied by scholars in ancient times. The ancient Greeks believed that these poems were in fact history and that their ancestors fought in the Trojan war and that they were decended from the heroes of the Epics. Today they are studied as important parts of Greek mythology. They are fairly heavy reads if you are to study them. Otherwise, you might enjoy to read about Achilles and Odysseus.
