There is a website spoofing the Illuminati, which supposedly allows you to join the Illuminati. Anyone can *say* they are in the Illuminati; the people from 1785 are all too dead to sue you- but it is just a prank, no more real than the places that allow you to "name stars". You can call the Sun, "Fred"- that doesn't make it an officially recognized name that scientists will actually use. Here's the thing: the last of the Illuminati members died by the middle of the 19th century (that's right, the 1800's). The Illuminati was disbanded, and many of the members hunted down by the Duke of Bavaria and the Catholic Church, their papers were confiscated, and they were strongly encouraged to renounce the organization. Worshiping the devil then, or even the suggestion of it, would likely have earned them a BBQ party where they themselves would have been the main attraction. The Illuminati is more than likely loosely based on some degree of truth, as most legends are. However, the speculative history on them seems to be pretty scarce and rather haphazardly concocted.

Most credible historians would probably assert that the Illuminati were once upon a time, a legitimate organization that attempted to gain political control of their immediate environment, and met with some degree of success (as well as some degree of failure).
