Meanwhile, Damon and Elena follow Stefan's trail and Elena almost gets caught by Klaus; and Tyler worries about Caroline and turns to her mum for help as it turns out Caroline's dad is tried to fix her vampire curse.

The show is not fallowing the books at all. The only thing they have in common are the characters (and in the show not all the characters from the book are in it), and sort of the plot (Katherine coming back), then the small things the Salvatore brothers are vampires and Tyler's a werewolf, Bonnie being a witch and this Klaus guy.
But in the book Elena is blond, she has another friend named Marideth, Elena and Caroline are not friends, Elena has a little sister not a little brother, there was no Rose and tons more.
The only thing is you should read the the four books (Not the return) because of Klaus, that's the only thing that's going to rune the books unless you've read them.
