Sir Barton became the first American Triple Crown winner in 1919, just about the time when it was becoming recognised as a series of races worth winning. He won the Kentucky Derby as a maiden (never winning a race before) and also won the Preakness just four days later. Then, he won another stakes race before winning the Belmont Stakes, which was at the distance of 1 3/8th miles then. He was amazing horse, though ran second to the brilliant 3year-old Man O'War the following year in a match race. Though, it is said he was suffering from hoof soreness at the time.

Just as the starting bell sounded and the race began, Ruffian hit her shoulder extremely hard on the starting gate. She recovered quickly, but was obviously in pain and leaning more heavily on her right foreleg compensating for the pain. She kept on running, pulverizing her sesamoids, ripping the skin of her fetlock as the bones burst through, driving the open wound into the sting sand of the Belmont track, tearing her ligaments, until her hoof was flopping uselessly, bent up like the tip of a ski. She was known for her incredible love of running and unwillingness to lose. Both were excellent racehorses; Man O'War was only defeated once, and that was very narrowly, after what was possibly the worst race in history, while Secretariat managed to set records in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes which still stand, and managed the incredible accomplishments of winning the awards for Three Year Old of the Year, Turf Male of the Year, and Horse of the Year, all in the same year - not to mention he also won Two Year Old of the Year and Horse of the Year together, the first time any two-year-old won Horse of the Year honors.

The greatest filly of all time was most likely Ruffian. Racing in 1974 and 1975, she had ten starts, taking an immediate lead and setting or tying records as she won them all. Her tragic eleventh race is a story that still captures people even today; there was a made-for-TV movie about her in 2007.

The Triple Tiara consists of the Mother Goose Stakes (which will be run June 27 this year), the Coaching Club American Oaks (July 25), and the Alabama Stakes (August 22), although the Alabama replaced the Acorn Stakes in 2003. Unlike the Triple Crown, where all three races are run at different tracks, the first two races are run at Belmont Park, with the Alabama Stakes being run at Saratoga.

I'm studying horses professionally, and I've been a fan of racing (and Ruffian) since I was nine years old. Go read any of the books on Ruffian if you don't believe there's a Triple Tiara. "Ruffian: Burning From The Start" is a great one, as is the Thoroughbred Legends book. Both mention the Triple Tiara.
