What percentage of people run a 5 K?
i dont know the answer for a half marathon but i read that only 1 percent of the population has run a marathon(26.2) In a 2008 New York Times article about the Half Marathon becoming the hottest new distance in running, it estimates that 650,000 people completed half marathons in the US in 2007. A Google search of the US population for 2007 gives a result of 301M total people. This would make the percentage of half-marathon finishers less than 1%. We're a pretty special group, eh? :)

What muscles would you use for competitive running?
As the athlete begins to start running forward, right arm goes forward at the same time as the left arm going back. This forms the drive phase using the biceps which allow you to have a strong arm swing & the deltoids which help the body to drive forward as well as the trapezius and latissimus dorsi; the joints the arms are using is the ball and socket joint at the shoulder and the hinge joint at the elbow -slightly, this is repeated on the other side of the body as the left arm comes forward. As the first leg takes a step the quadriceps help you to push off the ground, the hamstrings and glutes help to bring the leg back and restart the leg turnover and the gastrocnemius helps you to have a stable base when you sprint in your spikes. Always remember that your core is very important because you use your back and abdominals in all kinds of running, but they are enormously important for acceleration.

What is the shortest running distance for athletics?
It's up to what you find the easiest to run. In my opinion, the mile is the easiest for me. It also depends on what kind you're in. There's either long distance, sprinting, or throwing, but throwing doesn't involve running. Some schools also have pole vaulting. The mile is a good event because if you're not all about winning, you can go your own speed, but not too slow, and it doesn't tire you out once you've done it a couple times before. I had another junior high runner on our team that was slower than me, so I felt like I could go my own speed, which wasn't too slow or too fast. Always try to sprint at the end of every race. It helps with your time.

How long is one lap in the 6th lane on a 400-meter track?
400 meters.
The track is designed so that no mater what lane you are in, the distance is equal as long as lane 6 starts ahead of 5-1. There are starting markers on the track that will say 400m, 200m, ect. and that is how you know where to start. The starting points are scattered because of the potion of your lane, if you are in lane 1, you will be starting in the back. If you are in lane 8, you will be in front. The only time you are not staggered is if you are on a straight path such as a 100m or 50m.
