Your acer bush is losing its leaves?
Massive, sudden leaf drop generally tracks back to root or watering problems. Roots may be food sources to underground critters. Or they may be growing back on themselves. Girdling strangles plants, so they can't take in nutrients and water. Soil moisture levels may be off. Adequately moist soil's moist, not waterlogged, 6" down. Break the year down into a series of 7-10 days. Soil may dry out whenever there hasn't been a rain or snow fall event within each 1 to 1-1/2 week block. Supplemental watering may then be called for.
How do you cut 16 inch thick trees to fall in the right direction?
Hopefully the tree's weight is centered for the most part or heavy in the direction you want to fall it. If so then you would first cut out a chunk of the tree by making a cut paralel to the ground, on the side that you want the tree to fall. The cut should go about half way through the tree. Then make a diagonal cut at about a 30 to 45 degree angle and remove the chunk. Then from the opposite side of the tree make another cut just above the first one, again make it paralel. By the time the saw gets close enough to the missing chunk the tree should fall on its own. I've seen people try to help direct the fall using ropes to pull it the direction they want, but never used them myself. cut half way through tree on side where you want it to fall then move up and make another cut eight inches above first cut angle down cutting to the back of first cut which cuts out a notch then cut tree on back side of cut out notch when tree starts to lean yell timber and get the hell out of the way

How do you determine if firewood is dry?
It's usually easier to tell if it's not dry. Here are some hints: Probably not dry if: a. it feels soggy or punky b. it burns with excessive smoke, if it burns at all c. you hear a hissing sound when added to a fire d. it was very recently cut live (less than 6 months ago) e. it was stored in direct contact with the ground Probably dry if: None of the above and a. it was cut more than a year ago b. it was stored in a dry place (shed, tarp covered etc) at least 6 - 9 months c. it burns readily without excessive smoke Keep in mind resinous woods like pine will burn better "green" than hard woods but may create more creosote. (Not so much a problem for open campfires but can can be a serious hazard for chimneys.) Over the years one can aquire a "feel" for wood and sense how it will burn. This may take quite some time. If you are purchasing firewood find a reputable dealer. Look for "seasoned" firewood unless you can properly store it for use next year.
