This is a great question as I'm sure that there are many people who are unsure as to which occasion calls for wearing a tuxedo. Firstly, a tuxedo is a super formal outfit meant to be worn during big occasions such as weddings, wedding receptions, prom night and other elaborate events such as a formal cocktail and particularly where the dress code is specified as "black tie" event. Now whereas a traditional suit (preferably two button) allows much more flexibility as to where and how one can wear this, with a tuxedo, your options are quite limited. A black suit accompanied by a white shirt, a black neck tie or bow tie can be worn at formal events where the dress code is NOT specified as "black tie". However, one may argue that wearing a black suit with a black tie at a "black tie event" should suffice; technically, that is correct but it's not the social norm and doing so, may be frowned upon by the host. Additionally, a traditional suit can also be worn at semi formal events, a dinner party, or even at a nice evening out with good company however, it's recommended that you don't wear a tie but that is a matter of personal preference.

The rule of thumb for not only a tuxedo but any men's suit jacket, dress/dinner jacket or sport coat is that you never, ever, ever, button the bottom button.

A tuxedo jacket is commonly constructed with two button or a single button and you may also run across a three button tuxedo jacket which is slightly less popular and also, now a days; the double breasted tux is back in style. Now let me explain which button to leave open for each style of jacket:

1. Two button tuxedo jacket: Leave the bottom button open

2. Three button tuxedo jacket: Leave the bottom button open. If you're wearing a vest under your jacket, then you may also leave the top button open but that's not mandatory, just personal preference.

3. Single button tuxedo jacket: Only unbutton your jacket when you're seated otherwise, keep the single button, buttoned at all times.

4. Double Breasted tuxedo jacket: unbutton the bottom button. Now having said that, although it's ill-advised; a double breasted jacket is the only jacket where if you absolutely wish to do so, you can button the bottom button without making it appear as though you're making a big style mistake.

In other words; it's not as bad as buttoning the bottom button of a two or three button jacket.

These days there are more and more, I'll go over a few basic ones to start with. The three types of tuxedo shirts are the wing collar, the full or fold down collar, and the pique. The first two are pleated front, the third is a more or less plain front with a texture that reminds me of a really large queens oxford pattern. I would recommend the wing with a bowtie, the full with a regular or euro tie, and the pique should only be worn with tails. Outside of those you can pretty much wear any solid (no texture) white french-cuff shirt you like.

Tuxedo jackets have a satin lapel; tuxedo pants have a satin stripe down the outside legs. Tuxedo shirts often have a pleated front, as well as being compatible with studs and cuff links. Patent leather shoes are worn with tuxedos. Suits have a self lapel (same fabric as the body of the coat), no satin stripe down the pants, with a plain-front dress shirt and ordinary leather shoes are worn.

Traditionally, a tuxedo has a curved "shawl" lapel or a pointed "peak" lapel. Today, the majority of tuxedos have "notch" lapels like those of a common suit. Tuxedos also traditionally have only one button, compared to two or three on suits; this distinction is also less common today.
