If you are talking about the first commercially successful typewriter, most credit this to be the Sholes and Glidden produced by the gunmaker Remington. The beginning of the blurb I found is this: "It was called the "Sholes & Glidden Type Writer," and it was produced by the gunmakers E. Remington & Sons in Ilion, NY from 1874-1878. It was not a great success (not more than 5,000 were sold), but it founded a worldwide industry, and it brought mechanization to dreary, time-consuming office work. . The idea began at Kleinsteuber's Machine Shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the year 1868. A local publisher-politician-philosopher named Christopher Latham Sholes spent hours at Kleinstuber's with fellow tinkerers, eager to participate in the Age of Invention to produce devices to improve the lot of Mankind. . It's said Sholes was working on a machine to automatically number the pages in books, when one of his colleagues suggested the idea might be extended to a device to print the entire alphabet. They are both capable of typing and laying out text. However a word processor can do far more things than a typewriter, so in that way there is no comparison between the two.

You can easily buy a good 60's to 70's era electric for $20-$50 on eBay. A fully restored manual typewriter can cost $200-$500. A historic machine like a Blickensderfer might be worth more. An unusual version of a common office typewriter (with special symbolic keys, or accents) can push the cost up to close to $1,000.

The typewriter is a writing machine that produces characters similar to typeset print by means of a manually operated keyboard that actuates a set of raised types, which strike the paper through an inked ribbon. The first Remington type writer only printed capital letters. A model that was made in 1878 used a shift key to raise and lower type bars. By 1901, John Underwood was producing a machine that had a back space, tab, and ribbon selector for raising and lowering the ribbon.

The first writing machine constructed in the United States was the invention of William Austin Burt of Detroit. This machine was developed in 1828, and his patent was signed by President Andrew Jackson in that same year. It is interesting to note that Mr. Sholes invited Thomas A. Edison to Milwaukee to see his miracle machine and Mr. Edison told Mr. Sholes at the time that some day the typewriter would be operated by electricity. In fact, a short time later Mr. Edison built a typewriter which was operated electrically -- by a series of magnets. Since it was a large, cumbersome and expensive machine, it was never marketed. Mark Twain, the American humorist, was among the first purchasers of a typewriter, and he was the first author to submit a typewritten manuscript to a publisher

It was invented to help writers and also to help people in businesses. It soon became used for everyone as a way to type faster, send letters and more. Hand written letter were also hard to read at times making miscommunication a real problem.

No. A typewriter only existed to type things. A computer has many more functions - spreadsheets, Internet connectivity, presentation, gaming, communication, sound amplification - than just typing.

The idea of the typewriter began with the development of moveable type in Germany in 1434. So, it really didn't replace anything, but was a further development.

One of the operative parts of a typewriter is the paper mechanism. The paper mechanism helps roll the paper and move it left to write while the user types. The keyboard is also an operative part of the typewriter.

The value of a typewriter depends on the model of the typewriter as well as the age and condition, but they can vary anywhere from $20-2,000. If you're lucky, antique stores and flea markets may have typewriters that you can get for a steal...provided the owner doesn't know what they have.
