What does the S stand for in Ulysses S. Grants name?
The S did not really stand for anything - it was a mistake. President Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant. Congressman Thomas Hamer mistakenly nominated him to the U. S. Military Academy as "Ulysses S. Grant of Ohio" , possibly recalling that his mother's maiden name was Simpson. Therefore Grant was enrolled at West Point under that name. He made attempts to get the error corrected, but after no success ,he became resigned to it and accepted the name change. Ulysses S. Grant was therefore the name that was recorded in the army records once he graduated and became an officer. His nickname became "Sam" among army colleagues at the academy, since they figured the initials "U.S." must stand for "Uncle Sam".
In a letter to his wife dated March 31, 1853 he clearly states that the S does not mean anything.
(The story that he changed his name because he did not like the initials HUG cannot be verified and seems to be false. )

Why was general grant important during the civil war?
Grant was not a good general. Tecumseh Sherman and even George Thomas were better Union generals.
But as Abraham Lincoln said, Grant fought whereas McClellan mostly sat.
So, Grant's biggest strength was that he was a fighter and that he was able to think clearly during the battle.
Grant's biggest weakness was complete lack of reconnaissance. He was taken by surprise at Shiloh, but more inexplicably he was taken by surprise at the Battle of the Wilderness. By 1864, the Union had cavalry that was the match of that of the South. So, Grant should have been able to know at all times the strength and disposition of Lee's forces. Also, the battle took place in almost the same location as the Battle of Chancellorsville. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
I believe that the US Army has come to value qualities of U.S. Grant and have conscientiously created such generals as George Patton and Douglas MacArthur. There are similarities in the way MacArthur was surprised by the Red Chinese and the way Grant was surprised in the Wilderness.
Grant was only a very average General.
In his State of the Union Address on December 4, 1871, Ulysses Grant stated that "the policy pursued toward the Indians has resulted favorably...many tribes of Indians have been induced to settle upon reservations, to cultivate the soil, to perform productive labor of various kinds, and to partially accept civilization. They are being cared for in such a way, it is hoped, as to induce those still pursuing their old habits of life to embrace the only opportunity which is left them to avoid extermination". (Wikipedia)
The assimilation of Native Americans is expressed in the quote from President Grant.
Exerting White's culture on natives was an issue from the first explorers to any country where colonization occurred. Whites wanted natives to 'talk like us, dress like us, act like us, believe like us, and if possible, become us'. Tribes were not seen as "civilized"-- as seen in Grant's words, "...and to partially accept civilization." This occurred as well in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

How did Ulysses S. Grant plan to end the civil war?
General Ulysses S Grant wanted to wear down the Confederacy's forces, and cut the Confederate army off from supplies and food that would enable them to keep fighting.
Grant knew that the Union had a superiority of numbers and supplies, while the South had no more soldiers in reserve and dwindling resources. If Grant and President Lincoln remained persistent, it was only a matter of time before the Confederacy would be placed in a position of surrender but at great cost to both sides in casualties.
Grant and the Army of the Potomac fought a series of battles against General Robert E Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia. Grant suffered losses of tens of thousands of men, but kept pushing Lee farther and farther south, also losing men every day.
One of Grant's strategies was to bring the war to the South, destroying resources and railroads and homes. Grant cut off Confederate supplies by sending forces into the Shenedoah Valley, the major food source of the Confederate armies. US General Philip Sheridan fought a series of battles against the outstanding defense of CSA General Jubal Early until Sheridan finally controlled the entire region and destroyed the South's major agricultural base.
Grant sent General William T Sherman on a similar mission farther south, beginning by capturing the major city of Atlanta. Sherman then marched across Georgia, destroying crops and railroads, all the way to the port of Savannah. Sherman then turned and marched north to approach Lee's army from the south. Lee's forces, depleted by casualties and desertions, were under intense pressure from all sides. Grant's forces began to win every encounter, US cavalry destroyed Lee's supply trains, and by April 9 of 1865 Lee surrendered his army to Grant. The surrender of the last Confederate army unit occurred in June of 1865.
