Why did Tubby Smith leave Kentucky?
OPINION
There were many factors leading to the departure of Tubby Smith from the Wildcats. The primary reason given was that he was "worn down" by living in the constant spotlight that Kentucky basketball shone in. The pressures at Kentucky are probably the highest in American sports. Additionally, he had come under fire for several years do to lax recruiting, multiple ten-loss seasons and a history of playing a slow, grind-it-out style of basketball that while sometimes effective, is typically boring to watch. Fans clamored for an up-tempo style game, utilized by his predecessor, Rick Pitino.
How did the Kentucky wildcats get their name?
The nickname "Wildcats" became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 football road victory over Illinois on October 9, 1909. Commandant Philip W. Corbusier, then head of the military department at old State University, told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team had "fought like Wildcats." Later the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the University.

Why do University of Kentucky fans hate duke university so much?
They're still bitter about the 1992 tournament game when Christian Laettner hit a shot at the buzzer to give Duke the one-point, overtime win. They're also worried about Duke being considered a better all-time program than themselves because Duke's had a lot of recent success while Kentucky has always been pretty good but not quite as good and definitely nowhere near the Blue Devils lately.
**SORRY TO DISAGREE, BUT......
I am a resident of KY and true blue KY fan, and yes, it's true that KY & DUKE are rivals in Basketball...although I don't hate DUKE.
As far as being bitter about the 1992 game any bitterness was washed away when we hoisted the big trophy in 1996 and 1998. If the 1992 had been called correctly and fairly Laettner should have been called for a technical when he stomped one of our players, Timberlake, the game would have never gone into overtime for Laettner to hit the great shot that he did. I am not one to say "we were cheated" everytime my team loses, but anyone who saw that game (if they tell the truth) can tell you, YES, the referees missed a big one there.
As for the "all-time better program" do I even have to go into specifics? 7 national titles to 3 titles--advantage Kentucky. Most all time wins advantage Kentucky. And you brag about DUKE's "recent success".... Duke has not had a very good team since the Williams/Dunleavy team 4 or 5 years ago and we all know that they choked against an inferior Indiana team, and as I recall the game was in Rupp.
Bottom line, I'm as true as a KY fan as you can get, and I don't hate DUKE. Yes, in the past DUKE has demonstarted very poor sportsmanship toward us (see 'stomping' above), but we don't hate DUKE. Hating takes lots of energy & DUKE isn't that good. So, don't flatter yourself!

Who was the First black basketball player at University of Kentucky?
Tom Payne, Louisville, June 9, 1969.
Coach Adolph Rupp, along with his assistants, drove to Mr. Payne's residence, where Mr. Payne's mother served them coffee and biscuits while they signed the required paperwork to facilitate Mr. Payne's recruitment. Seven years prior, in 1962, the Mississippi National Guard was activated for the sole purpose of escorting Mr. James Meredith, the first black student at the University of Mississippi, in Oxford, Mississippi, to class, amid protests and verbal assaults. During games at the University of Mississippi, Tom Payne, while playing for the University of Kentucky, was subjected to crowd shouts of racial slurs, bombardments of trash onto the floor, attempted denial of his use of the team locker room facilities at which point Coach Adolph Rupp threatened to stop the game and leave the facility.
The inflammatory lie that was previously posted here, which stated that the University of Kentucky has not recruited a black player and that black athletes are required to sign up to attend some lesser school is a crock of paranoid garbage posted by some racist from, I'm just guessing here, Louisville? I'm thinking that the previous poster was tired of the jokes about "Pitino, table for two?" and decided to check below the belt. Sorry. Pitino is a sleaze. You can't make it with a skank on a restaurant table while your assistant is watching and turn that into anything but trash - no matter how much you try to besmirch the dead.

Did Arkansas win a national championship in football?
The 1964 national championship was historic not so much for who won but for when the title was awarded. In 1964 seven different entities named a mythical national champion. The two most notable polls to fans at the time-The Associated Press and the United Press International-did not wait until after the bowl games to award their champion. Because of that Alabama was named the national champ by the AP,UPI and Litkenhous groups. However, the Crimson Tide went on to lose, 21-17, to Texas in the Orange Bowl and finish 10-1 on the year. Arkansas remained the only undefeated team in the country at 11-0 with its victory over Nebraska. Two groups who waited until after the bowl games to name their champion- The Football Writers Association of America and the Helms Athletic Foundation-named Frank Broyles' Razorbacks as national champs. Notre Dame and Michigan also were honored by lesser known polls. Both the AP and UPI changed their procedure the next year, choosing to wait until after the bowls to announce their final polls.
