Many choose Zero over Kaname due to the fact that he has more of the passion. Even though fans see that Kaname and Yuuki have a very close past well so does Yuuki and Zero. When reading the manga, the sign of there being either an unrequited love or a secret love/passion for each shows very much. Thus making fans of Vampire Knight choose Zero. To many other fans, he seems hotter and cooler. His white hair seems to be a turn on. (Lol) Kaname on the other hand doesn't really appeal to the readers/watchers as he just protects Yuuki and even if incest is allowed in their messed-up Vampire world, he doesn't have that pull on readers/watchers. Zero loves Yuuki and he becomes and enemy which adds more to the story. Their past together is adorable and his side seems to have more appeal as he is a Vampire and a Vampire Hunter. Seems as though fans just love the contradiction with Zero and choose him. This is my opinion and I don't want everyone to take me seriously. I have read the manga and watched the series. I prefer the manga as it has more flashbacks and details. (Plus the drawings are way nicer)
