Virgin Mary

Mary was the wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus Christ, who was conceived within her by the Holy Spirit when she was a virgin. She is often called the “Virgin Mary,”. She was born in Jerusalem, the daughter of Joachim and Ann. In the Catholic faith, her feast day is celebrated on September 8.

Did the Virgin Mother Mary die?

A Biblical Perspective

The Roman Catholic teaching that Mary remained a virgin even after the birth of Christ is not just erroneous, in that scripture nowhere indicates this, it is in fact in stark contrast to that which scripture does tell us.

In Matthew 1:24-25 we are told "When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus."

This alone is enough that the Catholic position is false, but the evidence doesn't stop there.

In Matthew 13:55-56 Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us?"

Here the Catholic will often argue that the term "brothers" and the term "sisters" has either been mistranslated, or that within the Jewish/Hebrew culture these terms also were applied to close cousins, not just siblings. But is this strictly true?

The Greek word translated "brothers" is transliterated "adelphos", whilst this word does refer to one's literal brother from the same mother and/or father, it can also refer figuratively to those of the same people group, or countryman. However the use of adelphos is revealed with the Greek word translated "sisters" which is transliterated "adelphē" as this word is only used as ones literal sister being from the same mother and/or father.

The Greek word for "cousin", transliterated "suggenēs", is found in Luke 1:36 talking about Mary's cousin Elizabeth, and refers to a blood relative or in a wider sense a fellow countryman. If this was what was meant it Matthew 13, this is surely what would have been used.

Paul also wrote in his letter to the Galatians:

"Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother." (Galatians 1:18,19)

So as a quick answer: No. Jesus had both brothers and sisters. But regardless of that Matthew 1:26 makes it very clear that Mary did not remain a virgin.

Catholic ViewYes, the Virgin Mary died a virgin. The brothers mentioned in scripture refer to other relatives, such as cousins. This was a common reference made in the culture and time of Mary and is still held in some cultures even today.

Where was the Virgin Mary born?

The Bible does not tell us where Mary was born, but it was common in ancient times for young couples to meet and marry someone living in the same town or village, and to continue to live in that town or village after wards.

Luke says that the couple came from Nazareth, so this makes Nazareth the most likely place where the Virgin Mary was born.

Matthew strongly implies that Bethlehem was the home town of Joseph and Mary, so this time, Bethlehem was the most likely place where the Virgin Mary was born.

What are the 5 apparitions of Mary?

4 women that are identified as being related to Our Lady are: Her mother, St. Anne; her cousin St. Elizabeth; her cousin, Mary the wife of Clophas; & Salome, the daughter of Mary the wife of Clophas.

When is the birthday of the Immaculate Conception?

December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on 8 December each year in the Catholic Church. The Orthodox celebrate Mary's conception on this date, but due to a different (but probably compatible) theology on the nature of original sin, do not subscribe to the Western concept of the Immaculate Conception.

Since it is historically impossible for us to know when Mary was conceived, or born nine months later, the actual date of the Immaculate Conception is not known. The Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the womb of her mother, Anne. It does NOT refer to the incarnation of Our Blessed Lord in the womb of the Blessed Virgin nine months before Christmas - that was not strictly conception but incarnation, the two are radically different things, even though the grace that enabled the Blessed Virgin Mary to be conceived by her parents, Anne and Joaquin, immaculately, is dependent on the fact that she would later bear the God/man in her womb-the Immaculate Conception does not refer to that.

What was the approximate age in which the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus?

She was probably a teenager, I believe this because Jesus told the youngest apostal to take care of his mother, also in these days men in their 30's and 40's would marry after they were established as we see in the story of Jacob and Leah and rachel He worked for a total of 14 years for his bride. So Joseph would have been long since dead by the time Jesus went to the cross on April 1 33 AD to show us the example of what He had done before the foundations of the world.

Was Mary the mother of Jesus there when Jesus asscended into heaven?

The ascension of Mary is not biblical. Nowhere in scripture does it say that Mary ascended like Jesus. This is a dogma that, over the years, has been invented by the Roman Catholic Church and has no basis in fact nor scripture. Mary's departure, body and and soul into heaven is called her "Assumption" as the Ascension is reserved for Christ, for ascension denotes the action is done by the person's own power. The exact date of the Assumption is not known, though tradition dictates that eleven of the apostles were there, St James the Greater having already been martyred in 44 AD.

Catholics believe in both Scripture and Oral Tradition and thus the fact that the Assumption does not appear in the Bible is of no concern. What proponents of Sola Scriptura should consider is that omission is not denial. Christian tradition has always held the Assumption as true; even the Orthodox retain it though having split hundreds of years before it was confirmed by a doctrinal declaration of the pope. Worthy of note, especially to Protestants who point to the despicable practice of Catholics and their alleged "idol worship" regarding relics is that no church has ever claimed to have the body of Mary, something quite astonishing since Mary is the saint par excellence and certainly her mortal remains would receive great honour should they have been on earth. No church has ever made such a claim since her assumption has always been widely believed by Christians throughout the centuries and any assertion of possessing her body would have not been taken seriously. The assumption also makes sense doctrinally; since Mary was free of Original Sin, she would not be liable to the punishments of sin such as decay or death though some theologians believed she voluntarily died before her assumption to better unite herself to her Son and His sacrifice.

Why does the Church celebrate Mary the Mother of God?

"The title, Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae) was first used by Berengaud, bishop of Treves (d. 1125) in his writings. Later authors such as St. Antoninus, Archbishop of Florence (d.1458) and St. Lawrence Justiniani (d.1455) also invited the church to venerate Mary as her Mother". How did Mary trust God completely?

When the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she had been chosen to become the Mother of God's son, she was frightened, confused and had a thousand questions running through her mind. However, she trusted God completely and agreed to follow his plan.

Was the Virgin Mary actually a virgin?

of course!!! the bible DOES NOT lie! marry was only betrothed to Joseph when she became pregnant with Jesus, and it wasn't because she was "with" Joseph. the holy spirit, by the power of God, caused Mary to be with child. it was not through Joseph, but Joseph was Jesus's father on earth.

Actually, the bible says Mary was only a very young woman (in her teen years), and the thought of her having intercourse with another man before that time it would seem highly unlikely that she would have been with another man before.

Why don't Protestant believe in the virgin of Mary?

Protestants do believe in the Virgin Mary. They do not doubt her existence. They hold that she is the mother of Jesus, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Protestants do not, however, pray to or worship Mary. One of the core beliefs about Mary in the Protestant faith is that she was completely human, and that what gave her favor with the Lord was her faith and love for Him. This is another biblical example of God using normal people for His glory.

According to the Bible, Protestants also interpret that they have full access to God himself in their prayers (see John 14, for just one example). They need not petition to Mary or anyone else in heaven to have their needs met, rather, God is willing and able to listen to the prayers of any human and wants to answer prayers (as a Father wants to please His children) if they are according to His purposes.

Did the Virgin Mary and Joseph have any other children besides Jesus?

Yes.

According to some people, Bible phrases, like: "the Lord's brother", prove that Mary had other children besides Jesus. Even though the Bible indicates that Mary remained a virgin with the birth of Christ (Matt. 1:23, Luke 1:27, 23:53), they claim that she had other children. Since Mary had other children, she did not remain ever-virgin. Therefore, the doctrine on her Perpetual Virginity is false, and the Catholic Church is wrong for calling her the Blessed Virgin Mary. But do such Bible phrases definitively prove that Mary had other children?

The names of four brothers of Jesus are actually listed in the Gospels. According to Matthew: "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us?" [Matt. 13:55-56; RSV]. A similar list of names can be found in Mark's Gospel: "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon and are not his sisters here with us?" [Mark 6:3; RSV] These lists agree with each other apart from the minor difference between "Joseph" in Matthew and "Joses" in Mark. Later in both Gospels, the names of those, who followed Jesus to His crucifixion, are recorded. These lists contain family information on two "brothers." According to Matthew, the women, who followed Jesus, were "Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee." [Matt. 27:56; RSV] Mark's list includes: "Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,... and also many other women." [Mark 15:40; RSV] The same name variation is observed in both lists: Matthew refers to "Joseph"; whereas, Mark refers to "Joses". This variation supports their connection to the names of Jesus' brothers. According to both texts, James and Joseph (or Joses) are the sons of Mary. But this Mary is not referred to as the mother of Jesus. This would be an odd omission, if she were also the mother of Jesus. John's Gospel has a similar list of women: "...standing by the Cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene." [John 19:25; RSV] According to John, Mary the mother of Jesus was present at the Cross, but John also records another Mary other than Mary Magdalene. Comparing lists, it appears that James the younger and Joseph (or Joses) were the sons of the other Mary. Elsewhere, Matthew actually calls her "the other Mary." [Matt. 28:1] This other Mary is said to be the "sister" of Jesus' mother. Therefore, James and Joseph (or Joses) are Jesus' cousins and not His siblings. Now since both Marys share the same name, it is unlikely that they were siblings. Instead they were most likely members of the same clan. It would be confusing for parents to name their children with the same name. This is an example of "sister" being used in the wider sense as cousin. One small problem still remains: In Acts 1:13 and Matt 10:3, the younger James, an Apostle, is also said to be the son of Alphaeus. Perhaps the other Mary was married twice, or Alphaeus was also called Clopas (not uncommon in the Bible, e.g. Israel vs. Jacob, Simon vs. Peter, Paul vs. Saul...), or Clopas was not the name of her husband but her father, birthplace or whatever. The last explanation is supported by the Douay-Rheims translation: "Mary of Cleophas" [John 19:25]. The Bible text shows that Mary, mother of James, and Mary, mother of Jesus, are different women. The case of two Marys can cause confusion today as perhaps with the crowds of Jesus' day.

Mary the wife of Clophas in John 19:25 is not the mother of James and Joses. James and Joses, in Mark 6:3; were the sons of Mary the mother of Jesus to Joseph her husband. Remember that in Mark's and Matthew's account of the Crucifixion there is a mention of "many women" (Mark 15:41, Matt. 27:55). Mary the mother of James and Joses, together with others, were looking "from afar" (Matt 27;55 Mark 15:40) while this Mary wife of Cleophas "stood by the cross of Jesus" (John 19:25). This Mary, Cleophas' wife, was much nearer from the cross compared to the distance of the Mary the mother of James and Joses who looked "from afar", but it is to be noted and remembered that Mark and Matthew earlier Chapters report that Mary the mother of Jesus had other offspring/s that were half-sibs of Jesus and among them were James and Joses. So, it is interesting to note that Mary the mother of James and Joses the same Mary the mother of Jesus, while "looking afar" (Mark and Matt's accounts) together with "many other women" (Mary Magdalene, Salome, Mary the wife of Cleophas included, etc.) somehow, through the thick assembly of the crowd amidst pushing and shoving and the commotion thereof, found their way through it and then standing "by the cross of Jesus" with John (John 19:25).

Mary the mother of James and Joses the same Mary the mother of Jesus is the "other [Mary]" with regards to Mary Magdalene who shares the same name [Mary].

It is imposible for Mary to have had other children, Jewish tradition has it that the eldest son takes care of there elderly parents and that is what Jesus did till his death on the cross. who has the task of taking care of Mary after Jesus's death apostle john has that task, where did all these brothers and sisters go they all fall off the face of the earth but there is a reason for that they never existed in the first place

MY VIEW

I do see a variety of answers to this question. I my self believe the answer is yes, Jesus did have half-brothers and sisters. Matthew 12:46, "WHILE HE (JESUS) WAS STILL TALKING TO THE MULTITUDES, BEHOLD, HIS MOTHER AND BROTHERS STOOD OUTSIDE, SEEKING TO SPEAK WITH HIM" This is speaking of Mary, the mother and MATTHEW clearly connects them (brothers) with Mary, indicating they were not Joseph's son's from a previous marriage or cousins, but actual brothers of Jesus. This along with other Scripture mentioned leads me to believe Jesus had other brothers (and sisters). See also Matthew 13:55-57
Catholics believe the Virgin Mary's only child was Jesus. Some Protestants believe, based on Matthew 13:55-56, that Mary also had four other sons, named James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas, as well as an unspecified number of daughters.

In Matthew 13:55-56 the names referred to were cousins of Our Lord and not children of Mary. In the Hebrew tradition (as well as others) cousins were referred to as brothers and sisters. These 'brothers and sisters' of our Lord were most likely children of Salome or Mary wife of Cleopas, or both.

Who was born of the Immaculate Conception in the Bible?

Answer: The term 'immaculate conception' refers to Mary. Catholics and some other Christians believe that Mary, the Mother of Christ was born without the stain of original sin i.e. immaculately conceived. However, this is not spefically mentioned in the Bible, although the angel Gabriel refers to her as being "full of grace". Of course, Christ being God-incarnate, was completely free of sin.
