Very few of Mary's words are recorded in the Bible. One of her quotes is from Luke 1:46-55, commonly known as the Magnificat:

If by "Saint Mary", you are referring to Mary the Mother of Jesus, history does not record the year of her birth. Modern historians place Jesus' birth around the year 4 or 5 BC. For Mary His mother to have been a woman of childbearing age during that period, a plausible range of years for her birth would include the third to fourth decades of the 1st century BC. (20 - 40 BC).

To honour Mary, Catholics pray the "Hail Mary" or "Hail Holy Queen". Many people think that Catholics pray and worship her but they don't. They just have much respect for her because she was chosen to be the Mother of Jesus.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") believe that Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ. They do not worship her or pray to her, but consider her a virtuous woman of humble obedience and faith, and a "precious and chosen vessel" (Book of Mormon, Alma 7:10).

The Encyclopedia of Mormonism says, "Doctrinally, Latter Day Saints do not view Mary as the intercessor with her son in behalf of those who pray, and they do not pray to her. They affirm the Virgin Birth but reject the traditions of the Immaculate Conception, of Mary's perpetual virginity, and of her "assumption". Mary, like all mortals, returns to God the Father only through the atonement of her son, Jesus Christ."

Luke chapters 1 & 2 probably give the most detail about Mary's days before the birth of Jesus. When she is greeted by the angel (Luke 1:26-38) she is "troubled" until the angel explains his message. She finds the message hard to believe, since she was a virgin, yet the angel convinced her. Once she is convinced, she praises God. The movie The Nativity Story provides some additional indications of how Mary felt; while these have no Biblical linkage, they are quite possible based on what is known of society at the time. More than likely she was rejected and scorned, since few believed her story about being with child from the Holy Spirit. That, though, is supposition.

We celebrate the Virgin Mary's birthday on September 8, exactly nine months after the feast of the Immaculate Conception, though we are not sure of her exact birthdate. In Medjugorje, where the Virgin Mary has been appearing since 1981, she did tell the visionaries that her real birthday is August 5. So, Christians who believe in the apparitions celebrate it also on this day, but still observe the Holy Day of September 8 as well.

As for her death, we do not know exactly either, but we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on August 15. There is controversy as to whether Mary actually died or not, but it is a church law, or dogma, that she was assumed into heaven body and soul together, and we celebrate that great event on August 15. That is why we call it the Assumption, and not an Ascension, as we describe Jesus when he left the earth for Heaven. To ascend implies that you cause it to happen yourself, you ascend. To be assumed means that it was done to you. Mary did not have the power to ascend, she was taken to Heaven by God, assumed into Heaven. Did she die first? Again, in Medjugorje, Mary has told the visionaries that she did indeed die before she was assumed into heaven. If you believe her own words at Medjugorje, then she did. Others say she was taken at the moment of death, or just before the moment of death.

Mother Mary is pictured stepping on a serpent because in Genesis it was the serpent that tricked Adam and Eve into eating of the forbidden fruit. The benefits of going to Lourdes are the same for any site we believe to be a supernatural location. The key to the benefits is not the location but your intent. God knows your intent. If it is to getting bragging rights to your friends you will get the opposite. If you are reaching with full sincerity to God asking for healing you will get that. It is not based on the location but on the expectations of your heart, not even Jesus could heal someone that didn't expect it. What you expect / pray /ask of God is what you will get buffered by God's kindness.

The Catholic Church celebrates the conception of Mary in her mother's womb on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8. This is a solemnity (Holy Day of Obligation) and all Catholics past the age of reason are bound to attend Mass on this day. Her birthday is then celebrated exactly nine months later, on September 8.

If you wanted to do something special for Mary on this day, besides attending Mass, it would be especially fitting to pray a rosary or place flowers before her statue at a church.

In Medjugorje, where the Virgin Mary has been appearing since 1981, she has told the visionaries that her real birthday is August 5. She also asked them as a special tribute to this date, they should fast for two days and then celebrate. So if you believe in the messages given at Medjugorie, you could also do that around August 5.

Roman Catholics believe in Mary's Assumption into heaven, happening after the resurrection of Jesus.

However, all other Christians believe that she died of natural causes, but, as there are no records of when this was (except that we know it to be after the resurrection and, probably after Luke's gospel was written) we cannot be absolutely sure when that was.
