Why does France celebrate the Blessed Virgin Mary?
France is a strong Catholic country. There are many places in France dedicated to the Virgin Mary. One of the most famous places of pilgrimage in the world is Lourdes, which is in the south of France. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared to a girl, Bernadette Soubirous, in 1858. She is now a saint.
In 1830 the Virgin Mary appeared to Catherine Labouré in Paris and told her to design a medal, which is now known as the Miraculous Medal and is worn by millions of people around the world. Catherine Labouréis now a saint too. Many people go to the place in Paris where the apparitions occurred and where you can see St. Catherine Labouré's body in a glass coffin.

The town, however, is quite horrid. Every other shop is a souvenir shop devoted to cheap plastic effigies of the Virgin Mary or other tourist tat. It is reminiscent of the traders in the Temple that Jesus drove out. However, if you can get past all this commercialism, the area surrounding the Basilica and the grotto is very different.
Immediately one feels in a special place, where commercialism is left behind and instead prayer and worship happen round the clock, and where there is a real feel of God's presence and peace. Whatever the origins of the apparition of Mary the place is still very special and worthy of its place as one of the great centres for pilgrimage.
As for the healing properties of the water, thousands go there every year, and, whilst not all are cured physically, invariably spiritual healing takes place. However, despite the lack of a high percentage of cures, there are many hundreds each year whose recoveries cannot be explained by normal medical science.

How did Mary the mother of Jesus feel when Jesus was crucified?
Luke chapters 1 & 2 probably give the most detail about Mary's days before the birth of Jesus. When she is greeted by the angel (Luke 1:26-38) she is "troubled" until the angel explains his message. She finds the message hard to believe, since she was a virgin, yet the angel convinced her. Once she is convinced, she praises God. The movie The Nativity Story provides some additional indications of how Mary felt; while these have no Biblical linkage, they are quite possible based on what is known of society at the time. More than likely she was rejected and scorned, since few believed her story about being with child from the Holy Spirit. That, though, is supposition.
