The Perpetual virginity of Mary

Pope Paul IV, in his Constitution, Cum Quorumdam Hominum, of 1555, expressed the constant teaching of the Catholic Church concerning both the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and the perpetual virginity of Mary:

We question and admonish all those who . . . have asserted, taught, and believed . . . that our Lord . . . was not conceived from the Holy Spirit according to the flesh in the womb of the Blessed Mary ever Virgin, but, as other men, from the see of Joseph . . . or that the same Blessed Virgin Mary is not truly the mother of God and did not retrain her virginity intact before the birth, in the birth, and perpetually after the birth. (In Neuner and Dupuis, The Christian Faith, 217. See CCC, pars 484-486, 496-498, 502-506, 510, 723 (for the virgin birth); pars 499-501, 507, 510, 721 (for the perpetual virginity of Mary))

The Greek word for brother in the New Testament is adelphos. The well-known Protestant linguistic reference An Expository Dictionary of the New Testament Words defines it as follows:

1. Male children of the same parents . . .

2. Male descendants of the same parents, Acts 7:23, 26; Hebrews 7:5 . . .

4. People of the same nationality, Acts 3:17, 22; Romans 9:3 . . .

5. Any man, a neighbor, Luke 10:29; Matthew 5:22, 7:3;

6. Persons united by a common interest, Matthew 5:47;

7. Persons united by a common calling, Revelation 22:9;

8. Mankind, Matthew 25:40; Hebrews 2:17;

9. The disciples, and so, by implication, all believers, Matthew 28:10; John 20:17;

10. Believers, apart from sex, Matthew 23:8; Acts 1:15; romans 1:13; 1 Thessalonians 1:4; Revelation 19:10 (the word sisters is used of believers, only in 1 Timothy 5:2) . . . . (Vine, An Expository Dictionary of New testament Words, Vol. 1, 154-155.)

It Is evident, therefore, from the range of possible definitions of adelphos, that Jesus' "brothers" need not necessarily be siblings of Jesus on linguistic grounds, as many commentators, learned and unlearned, seem to assume uncritically. Be examining the use of adelphos and related words in Hebrew, and by comparing Scripture with Scripture ("exegesis"), one can determine that most sensible explanation of all the biblical date taken collectively. Many examples prove that adelphos has a very wide variety of meanings:

In the King James Version, Jacob is called the "brother" of his Uncle Laban (Gen. 29:15; 29:10). The same thing occurs with regard to Lot and Abraham (Gen. 14:14; 11:26-27). The Revised Standard Version uses "kinsman" at 29:15 and 14:14.

Use of brother or brethren for mere kinsmen: Deuteronomy 23:7; 2 Samuel 1:26; 1 Kings 9:14, 20:32; 2 Kings 10:13-14; Jeremiah 24:9; Amos 1:9).

In Luke 2:41-51, ... it is fairly obvious that Jesus is the only child....

Jesus himself uses brethren in the larger sense: Matthew 23:8, 23:1; 12:49-50.

The term Firstborn means pre-eminent and nowhere assumes later siblings, etc.

What were the circumstances of Virgin Mary's death?

Catholic Answer:

Current thinking by most Catholic biblical scholars is that Mary died a natural death, was buried and a short time later her body was taken into heaven to be reunite with her soul. This would mirror Christ's own death and Resurrection. Apocryphal writings state that when Mary was on her death bed, the apostles were summoned. All were present at her death except Thomas who arrived three days later. When he arrived he was taken to the tomb but it was empty, only the burial cloths remained. Two places claim to have the tomb of Mary - Jerusalem and Ephesus. There is no evidence to support either claimant.

The Doctrine of the Assumption states that Mary, because of her unique position as the Mother of Jesus, did not undergo corruption after her time on earth was completed but was taken body and soul into heaven. The doctrine leaves the question as to whether Mary died before the assumption open and either view is acceptable.

What do you mean by 'the Assumption of Mary'?

At the time of her death, or shortly thereafter, Mary's body was taken into heaven and reunited with her soul. She was 'assumed' (taken up by God) and did not ascend under her own power as did Christ. The Assumption is celebrated on August 15.

How do you pray the Holy Mary?

I think you mean to ask "How do you pray the Hail Mary."

Here is the prayer:

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

A: The "Hail Mary" is also a prayer rooted in Holy Scripture. Part of proper and effective prayer is to meditate on the Scripture and the life of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. The mysteries of the Holy Rosary are also scriptural and guide us to meditate on the entire life of Christ: The Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries. In other words, mere recitation of the words of this prayer are not helpful to our spiritual growth. We must meditate on the words in a prayerful way. That is an important part of the "how do you pray" -- by meditation on the meaning of the words and the events they pertain to. For example:

"Hail Mary Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee."[these are scriptural words the Angel Gabriel used to greet Mary when he announced that she would bear the Son of God]

"Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb" [the words spoken by Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, when pregnant Mary came to Elizabeth to assist her with the delivery of St. John the Baptist, who "leapt" in his mother Elizabeth's womb as the Blessed Mother (Mary) approached bearing, in her womb, our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Scripture also records that Mary said of herself: "all nations shall call me blessed." That is also a part of the Hail Mary -- to acknowledge and respect that biblical pronouncement and thus requirement -- that all nations shall call Mary Blessed and so we do in this prayer: The Hail Mary.

"Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners"[This is the acknowledgment that Mary is holy. The Angel Gabriel said so when he described her as "Full of Grace." In other words, there is nothing in her other than the fullness of the Grace of God. That, in and of itself, is a very unique state of being. I am not aware of any other human being declared, by God's representative/Angel, to be "full of grace" (essentially spiritually pure). This phrase also acknowledges Mary as the Mother of God. That part is a theological pronouncement: Mary is the Mother of God b/c Jesus is God and there are no "parts" to Jesus. He is fully human and fully divine at the same time - a divine mystery. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God (Jesus) not merely the "human part" of Jesus because Jesus has no parts. There existed a heresy, sometime prior to the year 1000 AD, in which some said that Mary was only the Mother of the "human part" of Jesus. The Church said no because Our Lord is not "part" human and "part" divine. This was a significant theological matter because it affects the Resurrection and really the entire salvific reality of who Jesus is: God Incarnate.

"Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death" [This is the acknowledgment that the Christian family extends beyond this earthly human life. We humans frequently ask other humans to pray/intercede to God on our behalf. The Catholic Church declares that such prayer/intercession is not confined to mere human/earthly intercession but that the entire family of God (the saints in heaven, the angels and those of us still residing on the earth) can intercede to God on our behalf. Also, in this part of the prayer, we acknowledge that we are sinners.

What was Mary the mother of God's social status and background?

The Scripture is silent about Our Lady's socio-economic status. However, the Scripture mentions that at the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin, made the offering of two pigeons or turtledoves (Luke 2:24) which were the offering of the poor that could not afford a lamb (Leviticus 12:8). Therefore, we could assume that Our Lady, lived a humble and financially modest life here on earth.

Is the Virgin Mary associated with the burning bush?

One View

Mary has no association or connection whatsoever with the burning bush. It was Moses alone who saw it according to the Old Testament of the Bible. The only connection, and rather a loose one, is that they are both in the same Bible.

Another View

The early Church Fathers interpreted the Burning Bush as a type, symbol or foreshadowing of the Virgin Mary. Just as God spoke from the bush while it was on fire and the bush was not burnt up, so the Virgin Mary bore Jesus in her womb but her virginity was preserved. This theme appears in theological writings, liturgical texts, hymns, icons and art.

What does the Magisterium say about Mary's virginity?

Mary was a virgin when she conceived of Jesus and remained a virgin the rest of her life.
