Did Bush get approval for war in Afghanistan?

Bush went before Congress to explain the need for war and received their approval.

It is not a requirement to receive their approval, but the law does require a President explain to Congress that we are going to use military force before doing so.

How is the latter group related to the Soviet War in Afghanistan?

The Soviet war in Afghanistan, also known as the Soviet-Afghan War, was a nine-year conflict involving Soviet forces supporting the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government against the mujahideen resistance. The latter group found support from a variety of sources including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and other Muslim nations in the context of the Cold War. This conflict was concurrent to the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War. Initially Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on August 7, 1978. The final troop withdrawal began on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989. Did Obama perpetuate the war in Afghanistan for political gain?

No, there is no evidence of it. This was a war that began under President Bush, like the war in Iraq. When he took office, Mr. Obama promised he would end our long and costly involvement in Iraq and bring the troops home, which he did; and then, he said he would gradually wind down and conclude U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. Presidents cannot instantly end a war, no matter who they are. It takes time and a sensible military strategy to achieve a successful draw-down.

Why is there a war in Afghanistan and israel?

because the terrorist started attacking the rest of the world and now SOME countries are fighting the terrorist so the don't attack the world anymore

That is the common government and media driven belief, which requires little thought to "choose a side."

Terrorists, Afghans, Iranians are all humans, they have real human problems, problems you understand and problems you don't. But they are human, even the suicide bombers are humans, they are in fact, your brothers, and if your brothers are strapping bombs to themselves, the problem must be very great. You would much rather let your leaders tell you they are insane and "devil spawn." No, indeed they are humans. Humans trying to have some small affect on the world they find themselves in before they die. They are actively resisting against something they believe is irresistible. If your leaders tell you to hate another group of humans, then what kind of leader is he? What is his plan that requires this hate?

Israel is only 50 years old, I have a bottle of Coca-Cola that is older. After WWII and all of Hitler's invading, attacking, killing and inhumanity, the United States decided to help some Jews do the same, invade and occupy a peaceful nation, Palestine, attack and kill in the fashion of religious zeal and genocide so many unarmed Palestinian people, that they could create a new country that by default makes them the enemy of every country around it. Now having established a Judeo-Christian foothold in the Middle East, both the US and the new formed Israel began to work on destabilizing the Middle East to get at that oil, first by trying to replace the leadership in Iran, then helping Saddam Hussein attack Iran, and funding other coups and uprisings, people like Osama Bin Laden. The people of the Middle East know that most of the violent history in the Middle East in the last 50 years is the fault of US and Israeli presence and interference in the area.

At some point these people decided enough and are now doing what is within their power to do. If the invading and interfering nation is the US, who funds your enemies, kills your leaders and replaces them with their own leaders, ensures constant conflict and can attack you with predator drones, how does one fight against it?

Why did Afghanistan use landmines?

Land mines are very cheap and effective. Lots of bang-for-the-buck so to speak. A popular choice for poor armies.

The sole purpose of landmines is to severely injure enemy troops and cause an inordinate number of casualties that must be treated.

Did Bush have permission for the Afghanistan invasion?

YES. While no declaration of war was actually even drafted by Congress, Congrees did approve an AUMF. An AUMF is an authorization for use of military force against a specific target or for a specific purpose. In the case of Afghanistan, Congress approved an AUMF for the use of US military forces in Afghanistan.

As for whether the Afghanistan invasion followed the international laws of war, this is much more debatable. However, since the purpose of the invasion was to hunt down an international criminal who was being given shelter by the current government, that can easily be seen as a justification for war.

Is their going to be a military draft for the war in Afghanistan?

If the administration wishes re-new such a program, it will most likely be for political reasons (a fairness in equal opportunity/and/or responsibilty, as one example).

Currently, their is no need for such a program; as the global war on terror does not require such actions, for the following reasons:

1. Troop strengths in Afghanistan or Iraq are nowhere near the troop strengths of US past wars. To include equipment such as tanks, artillery, helicopters, jets, and ordnance.

2. Such past levels of US military men/equipment are no longer needed. Vietnam for example required nearly a thousand bombs dropped from 100 super sonic jets to destroy one bridge, and still couldn't do it (example of a 1965 mission). TODAY's aircraft can do it with one or two UAV's (no pilot at risk of dying, or being taken as a hostage) and using a SMART weapon.

3. TODAY's military is full of Special Elite Sniper/Commando units, which operate with a fraction of the manpower needed in the 20th century. Every branch of the United States military (Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force) has some sort of Special Elite units. These units have more than the capability of terminating terrorists. They are equipped with .50 caliber sniper rifles; they are equipped with NIGHT Vision devices; they are equipped with LASER ranger finders: GPS navigation systems. Just 12 Special Elite Commando Snipers of the US military can perform the mission of a whole Vietnam War battalion of infantrymen (600 men).

4. If the Commander in Chief uses his "Special Elite Commando" type units and his hi-technology super weapons, then he will have the excellent results that he had when he deployed his SEAL snipers; which terminated some Somalia hi-jackers a few months ago on the high seas. Three shots fired, 3 hi-jackers terminated. Each bullet (cartridge) cost less than $2.00 apiece.

On what date did the War in Afghanistan begin?

Afganistan has had many wars over the centuries. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24th, 1979, and they withdrew ten years later. The Taliban, a fanatical offshoot of Islam supported by the US, siezed control of Afghanistan which then became divided by civil war. In this war the US supported the Northern Alliance (known in Afghanistan as the United Front) in their war against the Taliban, and they liberated a sizable portion of the northern part of the country. After eleven years of fighting the Taliban covertly, the US committed air and ground forces to Afghanistan in 2001, and the Taliban was officially deposed, but fighting in Afghanistan continues.

What is the current status of the Afghan War?

The civil war in Afghanistan is still surging on and seems it will continue for some time. The United States has committed many thousands of troops as have many other countries such as the UK, Canada and France.
