Warsaw

Home of Marie Curie, Warsaw has been a historically significant city for centuries. From the Slaughter of Praga to the Warsaw Ghettos, the city has seen its share of dark and sometimes violent times. In more modern times, Warsaw brings a bit of light with its many music festivals. These include the Jewish Culture Festival - The Singer's Warsaw and the Old Polish Music Festival. Warsaw is home to the Polish National Opera and the Warsaw National Philharmonic.

What were the effects of the Warsaw pact?

I would really describe the Warsaw Pact as an effect of NATO. It gave further justification to Moscow to dictate terms to its satellite states in Eastern Europe and essentially rule over everything east of the Iron Curtain. If anybody opposed them, for instance the Czechs or the Hungarians, Soviets could demand Pact action and make the effort seem more international and once again more justified.

What about the people in these countries? What was the affect on them?

I say that if one country was attacked by another that Moscow would have the power to strike against the attacking country in an act of mutual assistance. Perhaps this would cause another war. In this case, the people of these waring states would have to fight against each other. This would mean loss of population and wealth needed for the war. But that is all hypothetical. There were no wars because why? No country in their right mind would attack any of the seven countries excluding the USSR under the Warsaw Pact for fear of being attacked by one of the world's superpowers at that time: the USSR itself.

When did the Holocaust ended?

The Holocaust ended when the various camps were liberated by the Allies, mainly in 1945. By 9 May 1945 it was over, though liberated prisoners were still dying of disease and malnutrition.

In areas under Nazi control the Holocaust continued right up to the end of the war in Europe. Obviously, in mid and late 1944 some areas had been liberated, and there the Holocaust was over. For example, in July 1944 the Soviet Army liberated the first really big camp - Majdanek (in the suburbs of Lublin, Poland).

At the time of liberation, many prisoners were desperately ill and many died of disease soon after their camps were liberated, despite all efforts to save them.

What ended the Holocaust?

The Allied victory over Germany.

The camps were liberated, one by one, and the surviving inmates were freed. Most of them were too sick to go anywhere for a few months. They needed to be fed and given medical treatment. Many died despite the best efforts of the Allies, due to their illnesses and advanced state of starvation.

The Allied armies, coming from both the East (Russians and Poles) and the West (British, Canadians and Americans) forced the Germans to stop fighting and surrender their armies. On 9 May 1945 the last camp (Stutthof) was liberated.
