Traditionally a full eternity ring is given from a husband to his wife on the birth of their first child or on their first anniversary (whichever comes first).

There is no rule to say an eternity ring CANNOT be used as an engagement ring but bear in mind the following;

1) Full eternity rings cannot be adjusted should the girl gain or lose weight at any point in her life. This is because stones go all the way around. Perhaps a half eternity ring would be better.

Added: Etiquette only requires that the gifts be returned to the giver if the wedding is called off. If the wedding happens, but the couple ends up splitting within a few weeks, they are under no obligation to return the gifts, but it may be a good gesture, especially in the case of particularly generous gifts. The couple should consider their relationship with the giver, the length of the marriage, and the nature of the gift when deciding whether or not to return it.

I would say yes. But, only if you canfinancially afford it. If providing them with a gift will leave you strapped-I would suggest sending them a card. FYI: Almost no one was able to attend my grad party, but several family/friends from out of state still sent me at least a card.

Some Seniors can't afford much, so whatever you can afford would be appreciated. If you can afford more then ask your grandchildren's parents what that particular grandchild is saving up for (could be computer or programs that go with the computer.) I usually give money as gifts for the children in the family (in their teens to 20s) and give what I can afford.
