What else do whales eat?

Pilot whales are cetaceans belonging to the genus Globicephala. There are two extant species, the long-finned pilot whale (G. melas) and the short-finned pilot whale (G. macrorhynchus). The two are not readily distinguished at sea and analysis of the skulls is the best way to tell the difference between them. Between the two species, pilot whales range in waters nearly worldwide with long-finned pilot whales living in cold waters and short-finned pilot whales living in tropical and subtropical waters. Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the killer whale. They and other large members of the dolphin family are also known as blackfish.

Pilot whales are primarily squid eaters but will feed on fish as well. They are also highly social and studies suggest that both males and females remain in their mothers' pods, an unusual trait among mammals which would also be found in certain killer whale communities. Short-finned pilot whales are also one of the few mammal species where females go though menopause and post-reproductive females may contribute to the survival of younger members of their pods. Pilot whales are notorious for stranding themselves on beaches, and are among the most common cetacean stranders. Several theories have been proposed to account for this behavior. The status of both species is not understood and they have been subject to direct and indirect catches by fisheries. Whalers in a few countries continue to hunt pilot whales.

Are whales deadly?

if you watch the news or look at the yahoo site, you may see that there have been multiple deaths from whales. there have been deaths in water park places like sea world. they can drown you, and they are aggressive. not long ago i read about a man going swimming with a whale at night(don't know why. suicide?) and they found him in the morning with no clothes on. there were signs that the whale ripped at him and shook him, making his swimming trunks come off. there are certain kinds of whales that are not dangerous, but well known whales (orcas) are known to be dangerous. FYI sharks are not meant to kill people. they actually do not like the taste of human. the reason so many people escape shark attacks are b/c the shark spits them out. the only shark that doesn't bite is the Whale Shark. it doesn't make sense to me the name of it.

How do whales use osmosis?

Water for Replacement
  • Salt water fish are perfectly adapted to their salty environment and need osmosis to live. The replacement fluid taken on to replace the lost water is desalinated by a process known as diffusion. Diffusion allows fish to live in a state of constant osmosis.

If a saltwater fish is placed in an environment that does not contain the excess levels of salt outside, such as in freshwater, their natural inclination to pull in water and dispel all salt from that water will result in the fish exploding with water that is not being removed from them by their environment.

Water Overload
  • Freshwater fish, on the other hand, are subjected to a reverse effect. The salt levels inside their bodies are higher than the surrounding water outside because that water is constantly being drawn inward by the salt content in their system. Freshwater fish do not drink water as a result. If placed in a saltwater environment, they would literally drown in a sea of water because they are not geared to pull in extra water.
