There are two types of whales: baleen and toothed. Blue whales have unique markings on their backs and dorsal fins. Killer whales have unique dorsal fins. It is usually easier for scientists to tell whales apart that it is for regular people.

Whaling is a problem to some people but not to enough people to make it a business that cant make money. If all the people that want whaling stopped signed up to an agreement that they would not purchase any goods originating in any country for a given period of time then the country's that give comfort to the perpetrators of this activity will themselves soon put a stop to it. Japan in particular needs to learn that it is a part of the world community but it requires sincere people throughout the world to convince it of that.

There are a number of reasons.

1. Despite the claims made by pro-whaling countries, videos of whaling show that it is often not a quick death. In some cases the whale is hung upside down (fighting to escape, to breath), with it's head & blow hole (breathing hole) below the water until it suffocates.

2. The rate at which whales reproduce is slow, and the rate at which they can be hunted is high. This will cause extinction.

3. Whales provide only a small input into the food chain, so the gains are out weighted by 1 & 2. (IE it's unnecessary)

4. Just because it is "traditional" is no justification. It used to be traditional in some countries to offer live human sacrifices to the Gods when launching a new ship. In others it used to be traditional to bury the wife (alive) along side her dead husband, or to include her on the funeral pyre.

Not only affecting their ability to know when to migrate but also their food supply with the infusion of fresh water from melting ice caps.
