The play 'Wicked' is drawn off of the stage version of The Wizard of Oz. Stephen Lawrence Schwartz [b. March 6, 1948] based his play 'Wicked' on the previous book 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. Does Elphaba die in the book 'Wicked'?
Yes, Elphaba Thropp dies in the original 1995 book version of 'Wicked' by Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954]. She dies from having a bucket of water thrown on her by Dorothy Gale. So Maguire is consistent with the tradition as established by author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919]. But Maguire opens the door to interpretations other than Baum's 'The Wizard of Oz'. Maguire indicates that witches may not die and that readers indeed may be seeing Elphaba again. And that is exactly the loophole that Stephen Lawrence Schwartz [b. March 6, 1948] takes advantage of in the musical version of 'Wicked'. Schwartz shows that everyone is led to believe that Elphaba dies. She actually survives by the old, hidden trapdoor trick.
Two national 'Wicked' tours currently are performing throughout the United States of America. The first national tour officially opened in Toronto, Canada in March 2005. The second national tour officially opened on March 7, 2009 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers, Florida.
Each cast is as close to the original as possible. The actors are chosen for not only their singing/acting capabilities, but also for their physical and vocal characteristics.
Even minor parts (citizens with only one or two lines) are filled with performers who both look and sound like the original Broadway cast.
This attention to detail is mindboggling, but it does lead to a weird plasticky sameness to each performance. That is, it would be weird and plasticky if it wasn't so mindblowingly awesome.
Is Fiyero in 'Wicked' the Scarecrow in 'The Wizard of Oz'?
Yes. Elphaba Thropp, who is the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, turns Prince Fiyero of Munchkinland into the Scarecrow, to save him from being tortured by the Palace guards of her father, the Wizard of Oz. Elphaba also turns Peter Boq, who is the very important and very rich Munchkin who offers hospitality to Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto in The Wizard of Oz, into the Tin Woodman. She casts her spell, to protect him from being harmed by her sister Nessarose, who is jealous of his love for Glinda the Good Witch, and who is the Wicked Witch of the East in The Wizard of Oz. And Elphaba and Fiyero release a caged lion cub into the forest, to become the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. And ever passionate over the rights and well-being of animals, Elphaba gives caged simians the ability to fly as Winged Monkeys. Unfortunately, Madame Morrible, the Wizard's press secretary, gets the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Woodman to see Elphaba as the caster of evil spells. And the Wizard uses the Winged Monkeys to spy on Animals, who difer from animals in their ability to speak. Ironically, the Lion wouldn't have learned to talk if he hadn't been released by Elphaba from his cage.
