The origin of the nick name "Say Hey Kid" isn't certain.

One story is that Barney Kremenko, a writer, heard Mays blurt out "Say Who, say what, say where, say hey" and started calling him the "Say Hey Kid."

Another story is that he got the nickname because when he first joined the majors he didn't know anyone's name. In an interview Willie revealed "You see a guy, you say 'Hey man, Say hey man."

His nickname to fans is "Say Hey Kid." But to teammates and friends he's "Buck."

Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays were never teammates but they did play against each other.

He does a few a year and his prices has skyrocketed to $300 for a ball and much more for jerseys etc....go into signings hotline (google it for link) and that will give you his stops along the way. Also, he does not like flash cameras taking pictures of him as his eyesight has become a challenge for him. Further, you can write a very nice letter to him c/o San Francisco Giants and he might repsond, (he did years ago) but very doubtful now, unless he you include a donation form to Say Hey Foundation.

Yes he does, in fact signing his name probably represents the majority of his income. However, the price charged typically is upwards of $75 for an autograph on a photo. Occasionally he has been accused of being cold or unfriendly, which, if true can be blamed on the rigors of older age. The majority of people who have met him for a signing or otherwise have commented that he didn't simply sign the item and hand it back but rather took the time to ask a question and engage the person a little. If there is any negative it is that the line might take longer because of it but many would agree it is worth the extra wait.
