Windmills

Windmills are machines used to convert wind energy into other usable forms. They are commonly used for the pumping of water or milling of grains.

841 Questions

What is a windmill?

A windmill is a machine with sails or blades, usually four, driven by the wind, originally used to pump water, or grind grain,

Windmills were originally just that, a wind-powered grain mill (to turn grain into flour). Many "windmills", for instance those scattered around the Australian outback, are actually "wind pumps" to bring water from to the surface from deep underground.

Modern ones are used on wind farms that use the renewable source of energy, wind, to make energy.

What are the parts of a windmill?

The simplest part of a windmill are the rotor blades, generator and the shaft. but there are many parts when it comes to wind turbines. hope this helps!

Can carbon credits be earned from windmills?

Yes,the companies which are under Clean Development Management can avail carbon credits....

Can windmills kill you?

If the blade hits you in the head. Lol. What a funny questions. Can the electricity the produce kill you? Sure, if its big enough. Can the blades kill you when they spin? Sure, if they spin fast enough. Just like everything in life, if its moving fast enough - it will kill you ;)

How do windmills in Holland work?

Windmills are used to pump water over the dikes, so that the land is farmable and not flooded by sea water. Also they are used to provide electricity.

In the past they were also used to saw wood, make bread, make oils and probably some other things as well.

What was the first windmills in ireland?

Since 1992, Ireland's first commercial

wind farm has been operating at

Bellacorick, Co. Mayo. The wind farm comprises 21

wind turbines with a total installed

capacity of 6.45 MW, and produces

enough electricity to supply 4,500

households.

Why does holland need so many windmills?

Holland (the Netherland) is a low country. Next to the Northsea and with lots of rivers the Netherlands has been dealing with water for centuries. Building dams to keep the water at bay for instance. The Netherlands has a windy climate and uses the wind through windmills to fight the water.

What region of Spain is famous for its windmills?

In the province of La Mancha in central Spain.

How much energy can one wind turbine generate in one day?

Law of physics . . . energy cannot be made, and for that matter, cannot be destroyed. The only thing that you can really do with energy is to change it into a different form.

So, wind generators turn energy in the wind into energy in the form of electricity and a bit of heat. Power output is how wind generators are measured. Power size gives us an idea of how much work can be done by the electrical energy that wind generator put out. Wind generators come in many sizes (of power), from 'backyard' to huge wind farm sizes.

What kind of energy is a windmill?

Windmill composed of 2 energies. One is the mechanical energy. To make it work the force of the wind allows the windmill to run and this process produces the second energy called the wind energy.

How do you make a windmill?

A simple windmill consists of a vertical post with two rotating hubs - one vertical, one horizontal - attached at the top. Each hub is attached to the other, allowing the windmill to rotate horizontally and point into the wind. The vertical hub has slats attached radially to it, each one at a slight angle. As the wind passes over the slats, the Bernoulli principle (high pressure/low pressure) causes the vertical hub to rotate. By itself, a windmill is just decorative, but if big enough, it can be used to rotate grist stones in mills, run pumps, etc.

What is the basic working principle of air conditioner?

Air-conditioning BasicsAn air conditioner is basically a refrigerator without the insulated box. It uses the evaporation of a refrigerant, like Freon, to provide cooling. The mechanics of the Freonevaporation cycle are the same in a refrigerator as in an air conditioner. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online, the term Freon is generically "used for any of various nonflammable fluorocarbons used as refrigerants and as propellants for aerosols."

Diagram of a typical air conditioner

This is how the evaporation cycle in an air conditioner works (See How Refrigerators Work for complete details on this cycle):

  1. The compressor compresses cool Freon gas, causing it to become hot, high-pressure Freon gas (red in the diagram above).
  2. This hot gas runs through a set of coils so it can dissipate its heat, and it condenses into a liquid.
  3. The Freon liquid runs through an expansion valve, and in the process it evaporates to become cold, low-pressure Freon gas(light blue in the diagram above).
  4. This cold gas runs through a set of coils that allow the gas to absorb heat and cool down the air inside the building.

Mixed in with the Freon is a small amount of a lightweight oil. This oil lubricates the compressor.

So this is the general concept involved in air conditioning. In the next section, we'll take a look inside a window unit.

How does an windmill affect your community?

Wind turbines, used in combination with other kinds of renewable energy, can slow and eventually stop global warming if we also stop burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).

How does a windmill pump water from the ground?

As the reciprocating pump operates though the reciprocation of the follower,it guides the suction and the compression of water in the pipe. That's so when the rotary motion of the rotor blade is converted into the reciprocating motion, which deliver

it to the reciprocating pump, the suction and discharge takes place.

Different uses of windmill?

Most common uses are generation of electricity and pumping water (especially agricultural pumping for irrigation).

How you can make a windmill?

One way is to cut a piece of construction paper, staple equal-sized streamers on one side in a row ( ten is a good amount), then form a circle with the paper and staple it. Make at least 3 (6 would be better), equally spaced holes, with a hole-punch. Attach a string to each hole, tie a knot in all the strings at once, so that all the strings are equal in length and attach it to a pole (the taller, the better).

Where is Dutch windmills?

You can find dutch windmills all over the Netherlands. You can find most of the mills in the western part of the Netherlands. There are still about 1000 windmills in the Netherlands. Most popular: Kinderdijk (near Rotterdam) and Zaanse Schans (near Amsterdam).

What are residual powers?

Residual Powers are powers that the State have complete control over. Concurrent Powers are shared amongst the State and the Commonwealth, but where there is conflict the Commonwealth will prevail. Exclusive Powers are powers that only the Commonwealth have control over.

How to make a working model of a windmill with procedure?

A working model of a windmill is easy to construct from popsicle sticks. Simply place four popsicle sticks across each other at angles. Then put a nail through the middle of the sticks to attach them all together making the hole a little bigger than needed. Attach to a base.
