What could prevent the hard drive from loading Windows 98SE when attempting to reinstall it?

Preparing a Hard drive for Windows 98Usually, the problem is with the state of the hard drive at the time of the istallation. There are two utilities included on the 'Windows Start Up Disk', one of which is 'fdisk', and the other is 'format.' These utilities must be used in the proper order to insure that the disk is ready for the Widows installation.

First, from the DOS prompt A:\ type in 'fdisk'. Then, select the appropriate option to create a partition on the hard drive. (Note: Any data currently on the hard drive will be lost! Be sure to back up all data prior to re-installing Windows!) I recommend creating at least two partitions, one being for the operating system, and the other being a virtual disk to store software, documents, and anything elese that is important. I suggest assigning one third of the disk to the operating system, which is usually on the drive designated as 'c', and the the rest of the drive to one or more virtual disks. This protects your critical data if the operating system is compromised. The partition to be used for the operating system (Windows) must be made active prior to leaving the fdisk program. The computer should be re-booted upon exiting fdisk, to insure that the changes are properly made.

After rebooting, again from the DOS prompt A:\, type 'format c:'. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do this, because, again, any data on the specified drive will be lost. After c drive is formatted, format any virtual drives which you have created. This should prepare the hard disk drive for installing Windows 98. Be aware that Windows 98 has a minimum space requirement, which, if not met, will prevent Windows from installing.

What is a bad cluster?

A bad cluster is a hard disk cluster which has been flagged by the file system as being corrupted or damaged in some way, and thus will no longer be used for storing data.

In the olden days, it was not uncommon for a new hard disk to have a few bad clusters on it here & there due to minor manufacturing flaws and perhaps develop a few more during its normal lifespan. However, in modern parlance a bad cluster is almost always followed by several more bad clusters, and is a sign that the hard disk will soon fail completely.

How many files does Windows 7 have?

It depends on if it is a brand new computer or not. The only way to tell how many files your computer has is to go to your C:/ drive and search for * this will list all of your files. In the bottom left, it will show a count. This can take up to 10 minutes to index. An average computer probably has anywhere from 80, 000 up to 300, 000.

How do you repair Active Desktop in Windows XP?

The answer below works instantly if you are wanting to get rid of the black background for file name. I'm not sure what other symptoms Active Desktop has but will probably cure all.

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Open Display Properties.
  3. Click the Desktop tab.
  4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
  5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.

If you wish to disable Active Desktop, make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked. (If you wish to enable the Active Desktop, check "My Current Home Page". Add your current home page into your desktop or click New to add another web page and/or other Active Desktop features. To update the content, click the Synchronize button.)

Couple of options to try.

Right click on desktop, select properties, then Themes, and change your current theme. Once you have done this, you should be able to go back to your original theme without the problem appearing.

If that doesn't work, try searching for a file called desktop.htt and deleting it (it is a hidden file so go to "advanced search" and make sure to check the box to search for hidden files). You can also try manually deleting this file, it should be located in your "Document and Settings" under your username -> Microsoft ->.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If any of the above options do not work, go to Start > Run > type in "cmd" > Type in regedit and hit enter.

Once in regedit, go to Edit > Find > type in DeskHtmlVersion and click Find.

Change value from 110 to 0, and after clicking ok press F3.

Change the value each time you see DeskHtmlVersion pop up after pressing F3 - continue until it has reached the end of the registry.

Once completed, click any blank space on the desktop and press F5.

Your desktop should be back to normal after this.

Is it safe to clean registry errors?

Yes. The Windows registry can be safely "cleaned" but if you are unfamiliar with the process and change something in error you can cause significant problems. There are a few commercial products that are designed to do this for you. Do plenty of research online before you undertake registry cleanup.
