"default gateway" is probably your router's address.

However, keep in mind that some ISPs may consider unsecuring your wireless network "assisting others to steal cable service" even if you have DSL, satellite, or some other form of internet that doesn't come from a cable modem. Also, you will be liable for any abuse coming from a third party accessing your network, such as hacking, spamming, etc. In addition, you're personal information will be easier to hack as data sent over the network will not be encrypted.

If its your router then you should have it. If you dont, you are going to have to login into the router and reset the WEP settings. If you have lost your router password aswell you will just have to reset the router and start from scratch.

You need to find out, what kind of wireless adapter you have (b, g, n). When you know the type of wireless network your adapter supports, you can choose the router you need. So if you have an adapter which supports, lets say, wireless G, you need to get a router with support for wireless G (and even higher, it's good for future upgrade) networks.

On a Mac open System Preferences and select The Network section.
