Witchcraft

This is the category where your questions about witches and witchcraft as a spiritual path should go. Based on an ancient shamanistic way of life, witchcraft is a spiritual system known as "The Craft of the Wise" and were a valuable part of villages and communities. Practitioners were the healers and leaders of their people. Modern witches follow the cycles of the sun, the moon and the seasons of the earth for guidance and knowledge. Most, but not all witches practice some form of magic in its true meaning.

Where does the name witch come from?

The word "witch" does come from the Old English word "wicce" which meant basically the same as "witch" does nowadays: a female magician or sorcerer. The idea is older than our knowledge of the history of the word.

What is the early legal concept of witchcraft?

First Answer:

Since the beginning of the Catholic church, the concepts of witchcraft have always been illegal, taking in the concepts of the grand inquisition and the Salem witch trials(although Salem was a puritan town) Witchcraft would have been deemed casting hexes, making curses, or the result of a jealous neighbor. Witchcraft was usually punishable by burning at the stake, unless you aply Demitriesz Policy, which follows...

Different Answer:

There is a concept of a witch, which is dealt with very briefly in a couple of places in the Bible, but in insufficient detail to determine what, precisely, is meant. The term in the Bible is sometimes translated as "poisoner," and clearly cannot be a "star gazer," as the wise men from the East who gave presents to the infant Jesus were of this type, and were acceptable.

Laws about witchcraft existed from the Early Middle Ages, but there was a great variety of them. Some countries had laws forbidding witchcraft, with penalties for practicing it. Other countries had laws that recognized witchcraft as a superstition, and considered the execution of a person for witchcraft as murder. The Kingdom of the Franks, the Kingdom of Lombardy, and the Carolingian Empire all regarded execution of accused witches as a capital crime, so anyone who burned a witch at the stake could be executed for it.

In later times, there were investigations of witchcraft, and these lead to the first book on the subject of identifying witches being published, shortly after the Middle Ages ended. The witch hunts came after that.

How do you cast a love spell?

From a book on Druidic practices -

a recipe for:

LOVE POTION TEA

1 pinch of rosemary

2 teaspoons of black tea

3 pinches thyme

3 pinches nutmeg

3 fresh mint leaves

6 fresh rose petals

6 lemon leaves

3 cups pure spring water

Sugar

Honey

To make another person fall in love with you, brew this tea on a Friday during a waxing moon (moving from empty to full).

Place all ingredients in an earthenware or copper tea kettle. Boil three cups of pure spring water and add to the kettle. Sweeten with sugar and honey, if desired.

Before drinking, recite this rhyme:

BY LIGHT OF MOON WAXING

I BREW THIS TEA

TO MAKE [lover's name] DESIRE ME.

Drink some of the tea and say:

GODDESS OF LOVE

HEAR NOW MY PLEA

LET [lover's name] DESIRE ME!

SO MOTE IT BE

SO MOTE IT BE

On the following Friday, brew another pot of the love potion tea and give some to the person you want to love you. He or she will soon begin to fall in love with you.

All in fun - but good luck!!!
Classic Love Potion #9

There are a few different love potion spells based on the magickal number 9, but this is one of the more traditional ones. It's an easy spell, even though it does have a long list of ingredients. Thankfully, they are all pretty easy to find:

  • 9 oz sweet red wine
  • 9 basil leaves, fresh
  • 9 red rose petals, fresh
  • 9 whole cloves
  • 9 apple seeds
  • 9 drops real vanilla extract
  • 9 drops strawberry juice
  • 9 drops apple juice
  • 9 small pieces of ginseng root
  • 9 pink candles
  • Large cooking pot
  • Cheesecloth or fine strainer
  • Small glass bottle

Light candles around the area where you will be working (likely the kitchen), and mix all the ingredients in your pot. Stir together over low heat while saying the words of this spell:"Let the one who drinks this wine,

Shower me with love divine,

Love potion number nine,

Let his (or her) love be forever mine.

Bring everything to a low simmer and let it heat for another 9 minutes. Take the pot off the stove and let it cool. While it is cooling down, say the names of 9 love goddesses aloud: Venus, Ishtar, Astarte, Nephthys, Hathor, Aphrodite, Freya, Arianrhod, Inanna.

Strain your fresh potion to remove the bits and pieces, and pour into a stoppered bottle. Keep in the fridge until you need it. Give on its own to your loved one, or add to another drink for a romantic boost of magick.

Why are the witches important?

This is a left-over symbol from midevial superstitious propaganda. Halloween happens to fall on a very important Pagan Holiday, Samhain (pronounced Sow, as in Cow, -en.) Some theorize that the secular holiday of Haloween derived from the Pagan customs.

What is better black magic or white magic?

There really is no answer to the oft heard question; "Are you a good witch or a bad witch."

Fact is the magical energies we use are very much like other forms of power.

For this discussion I will use electricity as a mundane corollary. The energy itself is neither good nor bad. It is in its use that polarity can be attributed.

When electricity is used to cook food, heat homes and light the darkness it is perceived as good.

When it is used to torture people, damage things or kill someone, then it is perceived as bad or evil.

The energy itself is neither, it simply is.

In the same way, magical energies are simply there. It is how we draw upon and use the energies that determine how they are perceived.

What few practitioners of any discipline come right out and say is all magic is manipulation. This means as conscientious magical practitioners we are obliged to constantly monitor not only our actions, but also our motivations.

How do witches look?

You can tell if your in the presence of a witch, that has no distinctive symbols, by the feeling you get from there presence and there eyes,if you can do this that means you have a little Witch in you. A witch can tell when she/he is in the presence of a Witch. Some people are born with a powerfull Witch like ability and just dont know it. Cute 4' 11", brown eyes, long sexy hair, curvy figure, could stand to lose a few pounds... Oh wait - that's me! :o) Thats not funny darling! Witches come in all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and genders. Yes, a male witch is still a witch. The movie loved term warlock actually means "oathbreaker" and will get you nasty look if you called a male witch one. Think to yourself - what does a Catholic look like? What does a Baptist look like? The important thing is to remember that what you see in the movies isn't what you get in real life. Some people assume that witches have a gothic look and dress all black; others equate "witch" with the weird old lady down the street with very long white hair and twelve cats in her yard. Though that lady may indeed be a witch, most of us are not easy to identify and look just like normal, mundane citizens. If you are looking for a distinctive sign, some of us wear a pentacle (a five pointed star enclosed in a circle) as a sign of belonging to Wicca or other Pagan paths... But there are non-witches who wear that symbol as well, sometimes without knowing what it stands for. It's also true that the word "warlock" should be avoided. I am a male witch and I definitely wouldn't like to be called an oathbreaker. It basically means "harmful witch who hurts people on purpose".

How do you spell aquaintence?

The correct spelling is acquaintance (someone you know casually).

How do you spell supercalafragalisticexpaladocious?

The correct spelling of the long word from the 1964 musical film Mary Poppins is "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." (It is spelled out in a song.)

(see the related question below)

How would you know if you are a witch?

There's really no certain way to tell if someone's a witch other than asking them(and they still might lie) and that can be rude so be careful and polite about it. Some people who identify as witches dress in ways to display their beliefs, such as wearing pentacles or other symbols. However, plenty of non-witches do that too so it's not exactly a great way to tell.

But, witches still look like regular people. Most everyone is a witch/wizard, but, their magic is either too weak to even cast a simple spell or they haven't realized their power yet (usually the first one). These 'easy, simple' spells include love spells and hexes.

Why did elizibethans believe in witches and witchcraft?

How do you remove a spell off of someone else?

You can either;

Cast a protection spell on the person who the spell has been cast on--including yourself. Be careful with these, though, and try to use strictly Wiccan ones of minimal malevolent intent

Cast a binding spell on the original caster to prevent them from casting more black magic spells that could hurt other people.

A Witch's Answer

I do not recommend the uninitiated undertake either suggestions in the answer above. Much as both suggestions are what the "outside world" expect as answers, Witchcraft is not a game, nor is it something you can take on without years of study and practice. Witchcraft is an ancient spiritual path (religion) and it makes no more sense for someone who is not a practitioner to attempt this than it is for them you undertake an exorcism.

If you are already a practitioner, then you do not need to be told how to do things, your mentor, High Priestess/High Priest, or Teacher can walk you through it.

Trying to cast a protection spell without training and the knowledge and permission of the subject will only put you in the way of the Rule of Three, no matter your intent, it is still manipulation. As for binding spells, these are the very worst kind of manipulative spells. Making someone do your will is NEVER good.

If you are the one who cast the spell - refer to your Book of Shadows, and do a reversal.

If you are the one who has had the spell cast upon you.

First be sure you actually have been spelled. A run of bad luck, or someone telling you they have cast a spell on you does not mean it has in fact happened.

In witchcraft it is not just advisable, but essential to have the complete knowledge and express permission of the one you are casting on/for. Anything else smacks of manipulation, is basically unethical and puts the caster in the way of the Rule of Three. (That which you send out will return to you three-fold).

- Your personal belief system (or will) is your best protection from a spell. If you do not believe in it, or if you believe your chosen deity will protect you, you are in no danger.

How can you prove to someone that witchcraft is real?

During the Middle Ages, there were very few witch trials, and those that existed were usually based on testimony. The witch trials we hear so much about were a Renaissance thing, and there were people who specialized in finding witches, primarily by marks on the body, such as warts and spots.

What is a child witch called?

Generally speaking, a child raised by parent Witches are called by their given name; there is no official title for them, simply because they are raised with parents who follow a Witchcraft path. Some of the older ones may have been initiated (by their free will, of course) and are therefore called "Witches" or whatever title their tradition utilizes. Also, many Witchcraft Traditions won't teach a person the ways of their Craft, until they reach either adolescence or adulthood (depending on the Tradition.)

What makes a witch a witch?

Magick, and many other things. First and foremost belief. We believe we are, and we are of many different walks of faith. The one thing that binds us together is simple. Magick, and the earth, and the fact we are human.

How did witches supposedly get their powers?

They didn't know what they were doing, as they were paranoid superstitious Christians who conducted the infamous witch trials in Salem and elsewhere. They would administer such tests as "The Drowning Test," where they would take a suspected witch and try to drown her. It was a common belief that witches floated in water no matter what. So, if she was a witch, she would either float or she would somehow magickally escape and fly away. If she was not a witch, then she would, well, SHE WOULD DROWN, so the person was condemned to death either way.

They kept doing this to innocent people over, and over, and over again all because of the fear of the christian god.

What is a spell book?

Every witch I know has a spell book of their own.

We call it a "Book of Shadows" and it is filled with spells; tables of correspondences; lists of ingredients and alternatives; moon charts; recipes; bits of poetry; drawings; snippets of wisdom; directions to sacred places; meditations; and all sorts of other things.

Many of us have several books we have filled ourselves over the years, as well as copies of the Books of Shadows of others we have met, studied and practiced with.

These days it is not uncommon to find published spell books in bookstores and libraries, however, those of us who are practitioners tend to be a bit sceptical of published works and try out (and often alter) various spells before we add them to our own books.
