To export your contacts to your computer, all you need to do is -
1. plug in your iphone
2. go onto iTunes
3. click on your iphone
4. go to the contacts tab and select export contacts
Notice: In the new versions of iTunes you have to go to the tab called "info" and to select a service to sync with. You can synchronize your iPhone contacts with Outlook, Google, Windows Contacts or Yahoo!
If you simply want to export your iPhone contacts to the PC you will have to use third party apps like CopyTrans Contacts (link below).

You have to export the Outlook contacts for use. You can export to make a file and then import that file on other outlook.
This is not natively possible as of May 19, 2009. There are currently 2 iPhone apps - Air Contacts and Export Contacts that can do this. Exporting contacts 1. go to palm desktop on your PC 2. export your contacts from there to Microsoft outlook or windows contacts. 3. go onto itunes, click on your iPhone, select the contacts tab. 4. import contacts from Microsoft outlook or windows contacts. This may not work as i have a very old version of palm desktop. THIS EXPLANATION ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE PALM DESKTOP.
"Once you plug into iTunes, there should be a folder on the top that list: Music, photos.... one option is contacts." There is no such folder in the top list, but click on your iPhone in iTunes and go to the Tab called Info. There you can select services like Gmail, Windows Contacts etc. to sync your iPhone contacts. Be careful, this will sync in two directions. Therefore make sure not to delete existing contacts, but to merge contact information on your iPhone. If you simply want to copy your contacts from your iPhone to the PC (into iTunes is not possible) you may use a backup software or app, allowing you to export contacts.

I had this problem and called Apple, they told me its a blip and nothing can be done, the only hope is if you've backed up your contacts to your PC. The other hope is if you go to settings, mail, contacts, calendar and click on Import Sim Contacts, these will probably be the ones you loaded on when you got your phone.
