Its basis is both historical and poetic. The World War I-era poem "In Flanders Fields," by John McCrae, is set in the fields of Flanders, Belgium, where so many of the war dead were buried. The poppy is the VFW's official memorial flower. As a fundraising tool, the Franco-American Children's League distributed them to benefit children in the devasted areas of France and Belgium following WWI. The poppy has come to represent the sacrifices made by all American service members. Today, the VFW uses the poppy--theirs is called the "Buddy Poppy"--to raise money for veterans welfare and other charitable giving, including the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. Others: The National World War I Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri, features a display of poppies on the walk into its museum. The poppies represent fallen service members from all nations in the Great War. The poppy is a prominent symbol of Remembrance Day in Canada.
Red poppies began growing on the bomb blasted battlefields in the First World War. They were adopted as a symbol for the wasted lives and futility of war. Since then, poppies are sold by charities to help armed forces veterans who have and still are suffering from conflicts any where in the world up to the present day.
There are many papers identifying US Veterans. Some are a DD-214 (Discharge Certificate), as well as a Military retirement card for those retiring from the military, and service organizations for veterans issue membership cards, such as the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
President Eisenhower started the veterans day he signed the paper
The poppies for Remembrance Day are primarily made by the Royal British Legion in the UK. Each year, the organization produces millions of paper poppies to honor those who have served and sacrificed in the armed forces. The poppies are assembled by volunteers, including veterans and members of the community, as part of a fundraising effort to support various services for veterans and their families.

There are paper mills in England. Foreign produced paper would most likely be imported by boat.
Veterans make Buddy poppies. Originally, they sold red poppies, like those in Flanders, but there was a shortage one year. So, now the veterans make artificial flowers.
Today most charities accept car donations. The key is to find one that process the paper work at the dmv, accepts the donation directly. Also, it is important to find a charity that will directly benefit from your donation, rather than benefit the people who are processing the car for donation.
The VFW was created by Spanish-American War veterans from their 6 month war against Spain in 1898. Since this declared "Splendid Little War" (as it was known) was the United State's FIRST foreign war, this was the name chosen for it; Veterans of FOREIGN Wars...and as the name states, an individual must be a veteran of a "foreign war." Thus, normally, a written order or discharge paper indicating a "campaign ribbon" (purple heart, CIB, etc.) must be submitted with the application for membership. For your information, US Civil War veterans had their own organization...GAR (Grand Army of the Republic; for the Northerners). Since the US Civil War was NOT a foreign war, those Civil War veterans "might" not have been eligible for VFW membership. Neither would have been the wounded and surviving 7th US Cavalrymen who fought under LTC Custer or MAJ Reno during the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. Since both of those conflicts were domestic and not FOREIGN wars.
