Hermit crabs lay their eggs in the ocean. They live among plankton as hatchling zoea. When they become a megalops they begin the long journey back to land to find a shell. Hermit crabs can spend a long time away from the ocean, even carrying water in their shell and only returning to flick their eggs into intertidal pools. While it's claimed that they can be bred in captivity, it's a difficult process and not fiscally reliable, so all commercially sold crabs are caught wild.

No! Wrong kind of. Hermit crabs need salt water but only once a week. If you don't it's fine but is highly recommended. I recommend HBH Hermit Crab Salt. You can get salt water at your local pet store so like Petsmart or Petco or any where else that has salt water. DON'T USE SALT WATER FROM THE OCEAN! Hermit crabs don't really need salt water but it helps to have it. Hermit crabs use the salt water to soak in. It helps with there molting. If you have salt water for hermit crabs GREAT!!! If you don't that's "OKAY." Go out and buy some salt water for your hermit crabs. If you don't know where to get salt water you can got to your local pet shop and get something called hermit crab salt.

No, but you can tell the difference between a boy and a girl hermit crab.The female land hermit crab has tiny genital openings called gonopores. The gonopores are located on the first segment of the back pair of walking legs. They are close in to the body, near the joint of the cephalothorax and abdomen. The gonopores are the openings into which the male crab places his spermatophore during mating. The male crab, gently tapping and rocking the female crab, encourages her to come out of her shell. The crabs mate in a position where the female's gonopores line up with male's fifth pair of legs. The male gently places his spermatophore into the female's gonopores. Since females of both species of land hermit crab sold in the United States (purple claw and Ecuadorian) have gonopores in the same place and of the same size, it is probably safe to say that all the females of the species kept in captivity (including Australian species) have their gonopores similarly situated. Many crabs are reluctant to come far enough out of their shells to allow you to see whether or not they have gonopores -- DO NOT FORCE THEM!! To have a better chance of seeing them, try looking for them after or during your pets' weekly bath. I have found most of my crabs are willing to come out far enough, but not all of them. Do not under any circumstances attempt to pull a crab from its shell to see the gonopores. The crab will sooner allow itself to be torn apart than be forcibly removed from its protective shell house.

Haha, no. The signs that it needs to change is if it will not fit into its shell all of the way. (When its legs are mostly out) Edit: Actually, Hermit crabs do not pee on you. That wetness you feel when you hold them in your hand is actually shell water that they carry around in their shell to keep their soft abdomen moist. If their abdomen dries out, they will die. This is why it is important to make sure they have a fresh (dechlorinated) water dish that is deep enough for them to submerge in to refill their shell water. They also need ocean/marine salt water, as they need to balance the salinity of their shell water and in their body. They can survive without it, but have to recycle their urine to maintain their body's saline (salt) balance. Hermit crabs actually "pee" out of a gland at the base of their antennae. Please also note that, unfortunately, salt water mixes sold specifically for hermit crabs do not have the nutrients they need to be healthy. Make sure you always give them an ocean or marine salt water mix, and mix according to package directions. Too strong and the salt can burn their gills, too weak and it won't give them the nutrients they need.
