I know a German U-boat called the U-20 launched a torpedo on the starboard side of the ship Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. Survivors heard two explosions but the boat was recorded as having fired only one. 40 years later, John Light confirmed that the ship was lying on its starboard side and because the fractured steel plate was bent outwards, he thought it is a sure sign that there had been an internal explosion. This reinforced suspicion's that the U-boat attack detonated illegal explosives.

Generated a great deal of publicity which the British government used as a Propaganda.

What was the significance of the Berlin airlift?

The effort to supply Berlin through the Soviet Blockade. (apex)

Why was the US mad at Germany in World War 1?

Germany had sunk the Lusitania, which was a British liner carrying 128 American citizens, who all died. They also sunk many other merchant ships. Then Germany attempted to get Mexico to turn on the United States by sending them the Zimmerman note. This note was intercepted and sent to the U.S. The U.S. got increasingly angry at Germany, and President Woodrow Wilson asked for a declaration of war against Germany from Congress.

What country provoked America to fight World War 1?

Germany and the other Central Powers. The Central Powers were mad that the United States was not trading with them, but they were trading with the Allies. Germany believed that the United States was playing favorites with Great Britain, France, and Italy. In reality, the United States could not get past the army blockade established between the feuding countries.

What two German actions caused US to enter world war 1?

It was actually one action, and one diplomatic overture.Germany was attacking neutral US ships without warning, after promising not to. And in an apparent attempt to deflect the US, the Germans offered an alliance to Mexico, as detailed in the Zimmerman Telegram intercepted by the British. The Germans sunk the Lusitania believing that it carried supplies to Britain as well as arms in order to help the war effort. It was carrying some American passengers when it was torpedoed, and this led to America joining the war. However, Germany may have been justified, as the ship may have actually been supplying Britain with much needed supplies in direct disregard of the sanctions imposed by Germany. In any effect, both the Lusitania and the Zimmerman affair swung American popular opinion in favor of interceding (effectively) in the conflict.

Why was the naval blockade against Germany in 1939 ineffective?

The Allied blockade of Germany in 1939 had limited if zero effect. At that time, the Russo-German Non-Aggression Pact allowed for supplies to be shipped over land to Germany from the USSR.

What did Germans use to get around Britain's naval blockade?

The Germans used U-Boats to sink the merchant ships that were carrying supplies to Britain. German U-Boats were also used to target and sink naval vessels. On the day that Britain declared war on Germany, German U-boats sunk the British merchant ship the Athenia as it sailed from Liverpool to Montreal.

How did the British blockade of ships carying supplies to and from Germany violate International law?

The international law is that during war times you can blockade ships of WAR supplies, but not regular, neccassary supplies. i.e. You may blow up an enemy ship full of weapons, but you may not destroy a ship full of food and water. The British broke international law by destroying ships with only neccesarry supplies. Eventually they ended up destroying ships full of BOTH items of interest. Was the blockade successful?

The 1948 Soviet Blockade of West Berlin was a Failure, because although the Russians could stop land/ground traffic (trucks and trains) from travelling from West Germany, through East Germany to West Berlin, they could not stop airplanes, especially transports carrying essential supplies from flying from West Germany to West Berlin. After several months of around the clock planes flying from West Germany to West Berlin, the Russians gave up in failure.

When did Blockade of Germany happen?

When they were out at sea in 1526...

What circumstance led to an American posture in which true neutrality was dead?
