The effort to supply Berlin through the Soviet Blockade. (apex)
A. Berlin Airlift
pls
President Truman started sending planes filled with supplies in the summer of 1948.Planes flew none stop to the for almost a year sending Berlin food and water as well as supplies during the cold winters. The Berlin Airlift made more than 200,000 flights for eleven months until the Soviets lifted the blockade on Berlin in May of 1949.
I have solved this by process of elimination- My guess- Herr Theodor Heuss. It is hard to pronounce ( YHooisse!) but yanks got it to sound like Hughes. He was the namesake of a famous German Coast Guard vessel modeled by Graupner. Oh well we have ferryboats named in honor of politicians.
The Berlin Blockade occurred from June 1948 to May 1949 as a response to the Western Allies' decision to introduce a new currency in West Germany, which the Soviet Union viewed as a threat to its influence in Eastern Europe. In an effort to exert control over West Berlin and counteract the economic recovery of the West, the Soviets blocked all ground access to the city, cutting off supplies. In response, the Western Allies initiated the Berlin Airlift, supplying West Berlin with food and materials via air routes, effectively circumventing the blockade. This standoff heightened Cold War tensions and solidified the division of Germany into East and West.
Not so much NATO's role in the Berlin Airlift, but the Berlin Airlift in the role of the forming of NATO is more important.

The population of West Berlin at the time of the blockade and airlift (1948-49) was about 2 million.
The Berlin Airlift
No. The Soviets instituted the Berlin blockade, so the allies initiated the Berlin airlift to get supplies to civilians inside the blockaded city.
The Berlin Airlift proved to the USSR the US would not let Berlin be cut off. The USSR wanted to starve Berlin into joining them.
The significance of the Berlin Airlift was that it showed the Soviet Union that the western Allies would not abandon the citizens of West Berlin and were prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to maintain their independence. With the Berlin Blockade in place, the Soviets had expected the Western allies to abandon the city but underestimated the Britain and America's determination to supply their troops and the civilian population of Berlin. After the airlift began the Soviets claimed it would never work and the subsequent success of the Airlift was a great humiliation for them. For more information, check out the related question below.
